Nationwide case-based meningitis surveillance was established in Burkina Faso following the introduction of meningococcal serogroup A conjugate vaccine in 2010. However, timely tracking and arrival of cerebrospinal fluid specimens for confirmation at national reference laboratories remained suboptimal. To better understand this gap and identify bottlenecks, the Burkina Faso Ministry of Health, along with key partners, developed and implemented a cloud-based System for Tracking Epidemiological Data and Laboratory Specimens (STELAB), allowing for timely nationwide data reporting and specimen tracking using barcodes. STELAB was adapted to Burkina Faso's infrastructure to ensure suitability, functionality, flexibility, and sustainability. We describe the design, development, and implementation of STELAB. In addition, we discuss strategies used to promote sustainability, lessons learned during the first year of implementation, and future directions. STELAB's novel design and country-driven approach has the potential to achieve sustainable real-time data reporting and specimen tracking for the first time in sub-Saharan Africa.

Understanding the mechanical behavior of the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) may be insightful due to its high susceptibility to strain injuries, particularly during high-speed running in sports, such as soccer and track and field. While prior research has focused on intrinsic muscle properties, emerging evidence suggests that the biceps femoris short head (BFsh) may influence BFlh tension. Thus, we examined the effects of BFsh load application on the tensile strength and regional shear modulus of the BFlh.

COVID-19 variants continue to infect thousands of people even though the end of the pandemic was announced on May 11, 2023. Nextstrain CoVariants (CoVariants) genomic databases provide detailed information about more than 31 variants of COVID-19 viruses that have been identified through genomic sequencing, showing the mutations they carry. Mutated viruses may yield a negative result for a gene target using a PCR test that has a positive COVID-19 test result.

Unlabelled: Whole genome sequencing (WGS) has emerged as a powerful tool to facilitate the study of existing and emerging infectious diseases. WGS-based genomic surveillance provides information on the genetic diversity and tracks the evolution of important viral pathogens, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Multiplex tiling polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays have been used to facilitate sequencing of a variety of pathogens in support of genomics-based surveillance initiatives.

Background: Surgical interventions to correct abnormal quadriceps direction are performed in cases of patellofemoral joint disorders, to medialize the patella and reduce lateral stress. However, excessive medialization can lead to increased contact forces and joint instability, underscoring the need for a more detailed understanding of the effects of quadriceps alterations on joint biomechanics. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of variations of the magnitude and direction of the quadriceps force on the kinematics of the patellofemoral joint.
