Near-infrared-light-mediated optical tweezing of individual upconverting particles has enabled all-optical single-cell studies, such as intracellular thermal sensing and minimally invasive cytoplasm investigations. Furthermore, the intrinsic optical birefringence of upconverting particles renders them light-driven luminescent spinners with a yet unexplored potential in biomedicine. In this work, the use of upconverting spinners is showcased for the accurate and specific detection of single-cell and single-bacteria attachment events, through real-time monitoring of the spinners rotation velocity of the spinner. The physical mechanisms linking single-attachment to the angular deceleration of upconverting spinners are discussed in detail. Concomitantly, the upconversion emission generated by the spinner is harnessed for simultaneous thermal sensing and thermal control during the attachment event. Results here included demonstrate the potential of upconverting particles for the development of fast, high-sensitivity, and cost-effective systems for single-cell biodetection.

Chemically stable, lanthanide-based photon upconversion micro- and nanoparticles (UCNPs) with their characteristic multicolor emission bands in the ultraviolet (UV), visible (vis), near-infrared (NIR), and short-wave infrared (SWIR) are promising optical reporters and barcoding tags. To assess the applicability of UCNPs for the monitoring of early stage cement hydration processes and as authentication tags for cementitious materials, we screened the evolution of the luminescence of self-made core-only NaYF:Yb,Er UCNPs and commercial μm-sized YOS:Yb,Er particles during the first stages of cement hydration, which largely determines the future properties of the hardened material. Parameters explored from the UCNP side included particle size, morphology, surface chemistry or coating, luminescence properties, and concentration in different cement mixtures.

Airborne transmitted as well as multiresistant pathogens can spread rapidly in high traffic enclosed public spaces. Antimicrobial coatings of surfaces are a promising approach limiting the spread of diseases by targeted contact inhibition of microbes. A novel class of light-activated coatings including hydrophobic carbon quantum dots (hCQDs) and up-converter (UPC) are developed for this purpose including Safe-by-Design (SbD) principles.

We demonstrate an upconverting plasmonic polarizer (UPP) as an innovative platform that boosts the upconversion photoluminescence (UCPL) intensity and simultaneously modulates its polarization. The UPP features a metal-insulator-metal structure comprising upconversion nanoparticle-embedded SiO and silver nanogratings. This UPP is deliberately designed to utilize "asymmetric" plasmon resonance excitation, which confines only polarized light perpendicular to the nanogratings.

This work presents a robust method for the synthesis of pure β-NaLnF upconversion particles (Ln = rare-earths) on a tens-of-grams scale. The sintering process was improved by incorporating NHHF as a fluorinating agent and by arranging three inverted crucibles in increasing sizes to mitigate heat dissipation. This synergistically reduced the sintering temperature from over 550 to 350 °C and decreased the heating time from several hours to just 30 min.

Background: Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni are endemic in Madagascar, but reliable diagnostic tools are often lacking, contributing to exacerbate transmission and morbidity. This study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of three tests for schistosome infection in Malagasy adults from areas of medium to high endemicity.
