This work evaluates near-infrared () spectroscopy coupled with chemometric tools for determining the superficial content of citral ( ) on microparticles. To perform this evaluation, using spray drying, citral was encapsulated in a matrix of dextrin using twelve combinations of citral:dextrin ratios () and inlet air temperatures (). From each treatment, six samples were extracted, and their and absorption spectral profiles were measured. Then, the spectral profiles, pretreated and randomly divided into modeling and validation datasets, were used to build the following prediction models: principal component analysis-multilinear regression (), principal component analysis-artificial neural network (), partial least squares regression () and an artificial neural network (). During the validation stage, the models showed values from 0.73 to 0.96 and a root mean squared error () range of [0.061-0.140]. Moreover, when the models were compared, the full and optimized ANN models showed the best fits. According to this study, coupled with chemometric tools has the potential for application in determining on microparticles, particularly when using models.

Fruit and fruit-based products are a valuable source of essential nutrients, critical for food security, and drive economic productivity with minimal inputs. The significant rise in global demand for high-quality imported fruit and fruit-based products reflects a shift in consumer awareness and interest in the products origin and potential health-promoting bioactive compounds. Analytical techniques such as liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, inductively coupled plasma techniques, isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS), near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, visible near infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging (HSI), mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, terahertz spectroscopy, dielectric spectroscopy, electronic nose (e-nose), and electronic tongue (e-tongue) coupled with supervised and unsupervised chemometrics can be employed for traceability, authentication, and bioactive profiling of fruit and fruit-based products.

Colloidal Lignin Particles (CLPs), with their polyphenolic structure, are promising sustainable alternatives to chemical UV filters. This study investigates the photochemical behavior of CLPs under ultraviolet irradiation synthetized from five different technical raw lignins (Alkali, Organosolv, two Enzymatic Hydrolyzed and Softwood Kraft Lignin) via solvent-shift procedure. The suspensions were irradiated using a self-developed UV-pen set-up and a commercially available UV chamber, enabling controlled UV exposure over time.

Indoor and outdoor air pollution is related to adverse human health effects, especially in children due to their ongoing physical development. This study assesses airborne microplastics (MP) concentrations and associated inhalation risks in a school in Estarreja, Portugal, near a large industrial complex producing polyvinylchloride (PVC). PM samples were collected over two campaigns (winter and spring) in four classrooms (ages 3-11 years) and adjacent outdoor areas.

Introduction: Olive oil and their by-products have long been regarded as valuable sources of health-promoting metabolites. Although the composition of olive oil has been widely studied, less attention has been given to olive mill wastewater (OMWW) and pomace across different cultivars (cvs.).

GIRK channels are crucial in regulating cardiac excitability and present promising therapeutic targets. Notably, the genetic absence of GIRK4 prevents atrial fibrillation (AF) in knockout mice, yet research on specific GIRK4 modulators is limited. Addressing the challenges posed by GIRK4's intrinsic constitutive activity, we hypothesize that a GIRK inverse agonist unlike the traditional antagonist can actively downregulate the channel activity alongside reduction of the aberrant basal signaling which can translate to enhanced therapeutic efficacy.
