Article Abstract

Preferential treatment of kin is widespread across social species and is considered a central prerequisite to the evolution of cooperation through kin selection. Though it is well known that, among most social mammals, females will remain within their natal group and often bias social behaviour towards female maternal kin, less is known about the fitness consequences of these relationships. We test the fitness benefits of living with maternal sisters, measured by age-specific female reproduction, using an unusually large database of a semi-captive Asian elephant ( Elephas maximus) population. This study system is particularly valuable to an exploration of reproductive trends in a long-lived mammal, because it includes life-history data that span multiple generations, enabling a study of the effects of kinship across a female's lifespan. We find that living near a sister significantly increased the likelihood of annual reproduction among young female elephants, and this effect was strongest when living near a sister 0-5 years younger. Our results show that fitness benefits gained from relationships with kin are age-specific, establish the basis necessary for the formation and maintenance of close social relationships with female kin, and highlight the adaptive importance of matriliny in a long-lived mammal. This article is part of the theme issue 'The evolution of female-biased kinship in humans and other mammals'.

Human and murine studies reveal that innate immune cells are able to mount enhanced responses to pathogens after primary inflammatory exposure. Innate immune memory has been shown to last for months to years, longer than the lifespan of most innate immune cells. Indeed, long-lived hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) serve as a cellular reservoir for innate immune memory.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is a well-established treatment for HIV infection that suppresses viral replication by inhibiting viral enzymatic activity, thereby preventing progression to immunodeficiency. However, discontinuation of ART typically leads to rapid viral rebound within weeks, due to the reactivation of latent HIV from long-lived reservoirs such as resting CD4 T cells. Eradication of these latent reservoirs is essential to achieve a cure for HIV.

Siblings are an important part of an individual's early-life environment and may therefore play an important role in shaping an individual's survival. The quantification of sibling effects on survival is challenging, however, especially in long-lived species with extended parental care and overlapping generations, such as humans. Here, we use historical parish data from Switzerland to quantify how the number of older siblings and their survival status, age and sex are associated with childhood survival.

GD2T cells as a platform for single-dose and long-term delivery of biologics.

The efficacy of biologics, such as peptide and protein drugs, is often limited by their short half-lives in vivo, necessitating repeated infusions to maintain therapeutic effects. Here, we demonstrate that long-lived CAR T cells can be leveraged as a versatile platform for long-term delivery of biologics. Our recent findings show that the depletion of BCOR and ZC3H12A induces GD2 CAR T cells into an immortal-like and functional state, which we have termed GD2T cells.

High energy prices recently have moved nuclear power back into the limelight. The biggest risk of nuclear industry has been large-scale accidents that give rise to ground deposition of long-lived fission products such as 137Cs, notably Chernobyl in 1986 (Ukraine) and Fukushima in 2011 (Japan). In Japan, extensive land remediation of residential areas was carried out at an estimated direct cost between 16 and 41 billion Euros.
