Persistent interest lies in gender inequality, especially with regard to the favouring of sons over daughters. Economists are concerned with how privilege is transmitted across generations, and anthropologists have long studied sex-biased inheritance norms. There has, however, been no focused cross-cultural investigation of how parent-offspring correlations in wealth vary by offspring sex. We estimate these correlations for 38 wealth measures, including somatic and relational wealth, from 15 populations ranging from hunter-gatherers to small-scale farmers. Although small sample sizes limit our statistical power, we find no evidence of ubiquitous male bias, at least as inferred from comparing parent-son and parent-daughter correlations. Rather we find wide variation in signatures of sex bias, with evidence of both son and daughter-biased transmission. Further, we introduce a model that helps pinpoint the conditions under which simple mid-point parent-offspring wealth correlations can reveal information about sex-biased parental investment. Our findings are relevant to the study of female-biased kinship by revealing just how little normative descriptors of kinship systems, such as patrilineal inheritance, capture intergenerational correlations in wealth, and how variable parent-son and parent-daughter correlations can be. This article is part of the theme issue 'The evolution of female-biased kinship in humans and other mammals'.

Aims: There is a substantial body of literature on environmental risk associated with schizophrenia. Most research has largely been conducted in Europe and North America, with little representation of the rest of the world; hence generalisability of findings is questionable. For this reason, we performed a mapping review of studies on environmental risk for schizophrenia spectrum disorders, recording the country where they were conducted, and we linked our findings with publicly available data to identify correlates with the uneven global distribution.

We investigate the spatial patterns of major geo-hydrological disasters across Italy (for which national-level emergencies were issued), using an innovative target variable (Months in Emergency State - MES), which captures both the recurrence of disasters and the persistence of their impacts. A total of 62 potential predisposing factors were considered, covering four different fields: environmental, territorial planning, soil sealing, and socio-economic. A three-step feature selection process based on Pearson correlation, multicollinearity analysis, and ReliefF algorithm, was applied to reduce redundancy and identify the most relevant predictors (18), which were used in a CatBoost regression model.

Most research studies have investigated the impact of pet ownership on the mental and physical well-being of elderly populations, supporting the beneficial effect that pets have on their owners. However, few researchers focused on the well-being of both owner and pet. The present study aimed to explore the well-being of pets owned by elderly individuals using an owner assessment tool and the relationship between elderly characteristics and the pet's health-related quality of life based on the owner's assessment of their pet's well-being.

Background: Being a primary contributor to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), Hypertension is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Globally, around 4 billion people were estimated to have hypertension in 2019, resulting in 10 million deaths. However, the present study has been designed to explore hypertension awareness, control, and treatment dimensions in India.
