Ecological variation in resources can influence the distribution and encounter rates of potential mates and competitors and, consequently, the opportunity for sexual selection. Factors that influence the likelihood that females mate multiply could also affect the potential for sperm competition. In Wellington tree weta (, plural "weta"), the size of tree cavities (called galleries) used as refuges affects weta distribution and thus the opportunity for sexual selection and selection on male weaponry size. We examined the predicted effects of gallery size and male weaponry size on the potential for sperm competition. We asked if gallery size influenced the potential for multiple mating by females and potential for sperm competition, if male weaponry size was associated with relative expected sperm competition intensity (SCI), and if estimated male mating success was correlated with potential SCI. To quantify relative competitive environments of males, we created and analyzed networks of potential competitors based on which males could have mated with the same females. We found that small galleries had higher potential for female multiple mating and higher potential for sperm competition. Size of male weaponry was not associated with expected relative SCI. Regardless of gallery size, males with more potential mates were expected to face lower expected relative sperm competition. Thus, in this system, variation in the size of available refuges is likely to influence the potential for sperm competition, in a way that we might expect to increase variation in overall reproductive success.

Ionizing radiation is widely used in insect sterilization for pest control using the Sterile Insect Technique, which consists of the mass rearing of insects and their irradiation with gamma rays to release them in target areas where they will mate with wild females. However, there is a concern and controversy about the nuclear origin applied in this technique. One alternative for sterilization is the use of X-rays, which do not have a nuclear origin, are easier to operate, and do not generate radioactive waste.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a highly effective biologically-based method for the suppression of many insect pest populations. SIT efficacy could be improved by methods of male sterilization that avoid the use of irradiation that can result in diminished fitness and mating competitiveness. Alternative sterilization methods include conditional disruption of genes for male fertility, or using their sperm-specific promoters to drive the expression of genes for lethal effectors.

Inbreeding and the associated increase in homozygosity and potential accumulation of deleterious alleles may reduce fitness in a process known as inbreeding depression. Mechanisms to mitigate reproduction between close relatives, ranging from pre-mating mate choice to post-mating gamete selection, have evolved across taxa. In external fertilisers like Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), where females have limited control over paternity, mechanisms of inbreeding avoidance can be expected to evolve at the gamete level.

The initial molecular events mediating mammalian sperm binding to the zona pellucida (ZP) of the oocyte are highly complex and still not fully elucidated. Recent advances have identified multiple candidate sperm surface proteins, often functioning as part of high-molecular-weight complexes that mediate this critical fertilization event in a species-specific and coordinated manner. To address a significant gap in the literature, we provide an in-depth overview of the functional assays employed to investigate sperm-ZP interactions, emphasizing their underlying principles, potential applications, and key methodological strengths and limitations.
