Article Abstract

The lemurs of Madagascar are threatened by human activities. We present the first molecular detection of canine heartworm () in a wild non-human primate, the mouse lemur (). Zoonotic infection has been associated with clinical pathology that includes serious and often fatal cardiac and pulmonary reactions. With human encroachment and associated increases in free-roaming dog populations in Madagascar, we examined lemurs for zoonotic canid pathogens. presents a new potential conservation threat to lemurs. We highlight the need for wide-ranging and effective interventions, particularly near protected areas, to address this growing conservation issue.

and , the causative agents of canine heartworm disease and subcutaneous dirofilariosis, respectively, are the most studied filarioid species, given their veterinary and public health significance. Considering the environmental conditions and the role of Sardinia as a tourist destination, a study was conducted on 741 dogs to update the prevalence and the risk factors of these infections. For each animal, information regarding biological and management parameters was collected.

Dirofilaria immitis is a parasitic filarial nematode and the causative agent of heartworm disease in canids and other species. Heartworm disease is predominantly managed via macrocyclic lactone (ML) - based chemoprophylactics. Through opportunistic sampling, genotypically and phenotypically confirmed ML-resistant D.

Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a frequent complication in dogs with heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis. Although echocardiography remains the main diagnostic tool, its operator- and preload-dependence may limit accuracy. N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a cardiac biomarker that increases in response to ventricular wall stress and may be useful for monitoring right-sided heart disease.

Urinary NGAL as an Early Marker of Renal Dysfunction in Dogs with Heartworm Disease and Pulmonary Hypertension.

Animals (Basel)

Heartworm disease, caused by , often leads to pulmonary hypertension (PH), a serious cardiovascular complication in infected dogs. PH may impair renal function through hemodynamic and inflammatory mechanisms, even when traditional biomarkers such as serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) remain within normal ranges. This study aimed to assess urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) levels in dogs naturally infected with , with and without PH, to evaluate its potential as an early biomarker of renal dysfunction.

is a nematode found worldwide and capable of infecting several animal species, including dogs. In Mexico, infection in dogs has been detected in 22 of the 32 states, with a wide range of prevalence. Blood samples of 535 dogs from four ecological zones and 11 localities in Mexico were processed with ELISA (IDEXX SNAP 4Dx® Plus) with non-treated blood samples (NTB) and pre-heat-treated sera for immune complex dissociation (pre-ICD).
