Background/aim: One of the most feared complications after colon resection for carcinoma is anastomotic leakage. Prediction of anastomotic leakage can alter pre- and perioperative management of patients. This study validates an anastomotic leakage prediction system.
Materials And Methods: Ninety-five patients who underwent colonic resection between 1 January 2016 and 30 January 2017 were included in the study. Patient records and electronic charting system data were used to calculate anastomotic leakage risk on the http://www.anastomoticleak.com/ website.
Results: Fifty-six (58.9%) patients were male and thirty-nine (41.1%) were female. The mean age was 61.7 (min: 33, max: 90). Six (6.3%) patients had anastomotic leakage. According to the ROC analysis, the area under curve for the prediction system was 0.767.
Conclusion: The prediction system for anastomotic leakage produced significant results for our patient population. It can be effectively utilized in preoperative and perioperative measures to prevent anastomotic leakage.

Background: The primary treatment for colorectal cancer, which is very prevalent, is surgery. Anastomotic leaking poses a significant risk following surgery. Intestinal perfusion can be objectively and instantly assessed with indocyanine green fluorescence imaging, which may lower leakage rates and enhance surgical results.

Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Scopus from inception to April 2025 for studies comparing thoracoscopic versus conventional thoracotomy approaches. Two independent reviewers screened studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias using appropriate tools.

Introduction: Remote ischaemic preconditioning (RIPC) which consists of repeated brief episodes of non-lethal limb ischaemia is associated with organ protection and improved clinical outcomes through complex pathophysiological pathways. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the postoperative effects of RIPC in bowel recovery and surgical morbidity after colorectal surgery.

Objective: To evaluate diagnostic significance of IL-6 compared to CRP for early detection of anastomotic leakage after colon resection for colorectal cancer.
Material And Methods: The study included 277 patients who underwent total resection for colorectal cancer. Patients were retrospectively divided into three groups: without complications (=227), with anastomotic leakage (=30), and other postoperative complications (=20).
Aim: This study evaluated the short-term outcomes of low anterior resection for rectal cancer in Japan before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, with a particular focus on the timing of its reclassification within Japan in May 2023.
Methods: Using data from the Japanese National Clinical Database, we analyzed 109 754 low anterior resection cases between January 2018 and December 2023, categorized into pre-pandemic (February 2020 and earlier), pandemic (March 2020-April 2023), and post-pandemic (May 2023 onward) periods. Trends in the number of low anterior resection cases, postoperative intensive care unit utilization, and complications, including anastomotic leakage and pneumonia, were examined.
