In the forensic field, knowledge about the time of deposition of semen traces is extremely valuable to law enforcement agencies to assess the relevance of the traces and the validity of witness testimonies. However, currently, no method exists that is able to estimate the time of deposition of semen stains, due to the complex chemistry of the constituents and variation in degradation patterns. Here, we demonstrate a non-contact age estimation method to assess the time of deposition of semen stains using fluorescence spectroscopy. Protein-lipid oxidation reactions were monitored in semen stains over time using protein fluorescence and fluorescent oxidation product signatures to reveal distinctive aging patterns. On the basis of the relative amounts of these fluorescent products and the rate at which they are converted, successful age estimation was achieved up to a value of 16 days, with a median absolute error of 1.7 days. We demonstrate here a new tool that can fill the current gap in intelligence about the age of semen traces that has been challenging the forensic community worldwide.

The northern South China Sea (SCS) shelf and southern Taiwan Strait (TS) are dynamic marginal seas influenced by both freshwater discharge from the Pearl River and seasonal coastal upwelling. These interacting hydrological forces shape ecological gradients that affect marine planktonic communities. Planktonic foraminiferal assemblages were analyzed from plankton tow and surface sediment samples collected during three cruises (2018, 2020, and 2022) along a ∼1000 km transect extending from the Pearl River estuary to the southern TS.

The study investigates the long-term effects of the 2015 Fundão tailings dam collapse in Brazil, focusing on metal accumulation in soil, plants and its implications for ecosystem recovery. The research, conducted between 2021 and 2024, analyzed 3311 individuals from areas directly and indirectly affected by the dam collapse, as well as from non-affected areas, integrating geochemical, spatial, and temporal analyses. Metal concentration and cellular damage were evaluated in roots and leaves.

Prototheca, a genus of opportunistic pathogenic microalgae, can cause protothecosis in humans and animals, manifesting as cutaneous lesions or disseminated/systemic infections. This report describes a rare case of Prototheca wickerhamii toe infection in a 78-year-old Chinese male, presenting initially as gouty arthritis. The patient, who worked in fish farming with frequent water exposure, had a history of herpes zoster and hypertension.

The complement system plays a paradoxical role in systemic lupus erythematosus physiopathology, acting both as a protective mechanism and as a driver of tissue injury, depending on disease stage. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) further exacerbate disease activity by promoting complement activation and autoantigen exposure, forming an amplifying inflammatory loop. Lupus nephritis remains challenging to monitor using conventional complement biomarkers such as CH50, C3, and C4; the utility of anti-C1q, anti-ficolin, and anti-C1s antibodies, along with tissue-based markers such as renal C4d and C5b-9 deposits, as markers of disease activity and prognosis, is discussed.

The distribution of tau pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD) shows remarkable inter-individual heterogeneity, including hemispheric asymmetry. However, the factors driving this asymmetry remain poorly understood.
