Occupational lung disease remains a serious concern among miner workers, underscoring the need for improved characterization of respirable dust. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) enables high-resolution analysis of filter samples, but accurate identification of complex, multi-constituent particles like agglomerates during direct-on-filter (DOF) analysis remains challenging. This is because standard tools for automated SEM-EDX treat each dust entity as an independent particle.

Occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) remains a significant health concern in metal and nonmetal (MNM) mining operations, contributing to the development of silicosis, lung cancer, and other chronic respiratory conditions. This review examines the prevalence and effects of RCS exposure in MNM mining environments, the toxicity of silica dust, and the effectiveness of regulatory interventions aimed at controlling exposure and mitigating health hazards. Key factors influencing RCS concentrations, including mine type, size, and geographic location, are analyzed, with particular focus on the impact of recent regulatory updates from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

Background: Silicosis, a devastating occupational lung disease caused by silica dust inhalation, lacks effective treatment options. Evodiamine (Evo), a bioactive alkaloid, has demonstrated anti-fibrotic potential in various diseases; however, its efficacy in silicosis and underlying mechanisms remain elusive. This study aims to systematically investigate Evo's therapeutic effects and mechanisms against silicosis.

Ixodids transmit a variety of disease-causing agents that afflict humans, livestock, companion animals, and wildlife, as well as reducing meat and milk yields, reproduction, hide quality, and occasionally inducing death from exsanguination. While the primary control tactic has been application of conventional synthetic acaricides, resistance to many of those products has occurred among various ixodid species. This development has instigated searches for alternative control tactics, such as growth regulators, bioactive animal and botanical substances, vaccines, biological control, and silica-based dusts.

Background: Coal mine workers are exposed to many occupational hazards which may affect mortality including respirable coal mine dust, crystalline silica and diesel engine emissions. Several studies have shown decreased overall mortality, but studies did not define the jobs held, did not include women coal mine workers and lacked smoking data.
Methods: A cohort of coal mine workers, from Queensland, Australia, was linked to the national death registry.
