Article Abstract

Obesity is regarded as a risk factor for various benign and malignant diseases. We evaluated whether or not the body mass index (BMI) was associated with the presence of gastroesophageal varices in asymptomatic hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related compensated cirrhosis (Child-Pugh grade A status). Among a total of 794 patients of HCV-related chronic liver disease, 90 had histologically-proven cirrhosis, and 63 were classified as having compensated cirrhosis (30 had varices, and the remaining 33 did not). The values of prothrombin time (%) and platelet count were significantly lower in the patients with varices than in those without (=0.042 and =0.013, respectively). In addition to the abovementioned variables, the BMI was significantly higher in the patients with varices than in those without (=0.031). In a multivariate analysis, only an increased BMI (odds ratio 1.205, 95% confidence interval 1.009-1.486, =0.039) was independently associated with the presence of varices. In asymptomatic HCV-related compensated cirrhosis with a Child-Pugh A status, an increased BMI is suggested to be related to the presence of gastroesophageal varices.

Objective Reflux esophagitis (RE) is caused by gastroesophageal acid reflux, whereas the heterotopic gastric mucosa (HGM) of the cervical esophagus often shows acid secretion. This study investigated whether an intra-esophageal acidic condition in patients with RE or HGM prevents the occurrence of esophageal candidiasis. Materials We enrolled 5,221 adults (males/females: 3,260/1,961, mean age 54.

Portal hypertension (PH) is a major complication of chronic liver disease, often leading to serious clinical consequences such as variceal bleeding, ascites, and splenomegaly. The current gold standard for PH diagnosis, namely, hepatic venous pressure gradient measurement, is invasive and not widely available. Transient elastography has emerged as a non-invasive alternative for assessing liver stiffness (LS), and recent studies have highlighted the potential role of splenic stiffness (SS) in evaluating PH severity.

Protodrilidae is a small family of almost exclusively interstitial annelids that lack parapodia and chaetae and possess a basiepithelial nervous system. This study presents a histological description of Lindrilus flavocapitatus (Uljanin, 1877), a protodrilid species last examined morphologically in the early 20th century, and provides detailed information on the organization of its nervous and sensory systems using histochemical detection of catecholamines (CAs), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and alpha-tubulin immunolabelling. The epidermal ciliary structures on the head show a species-specific distribution pattern, and SEM reveals three types of ciliary sensory structures, similar to those previously described in other protodrilids.

Sex disparity in survival outcomes of advanced gastric adenocarcinoma.

Division of Research, Kaiser Permanente, Oakland, CA, 94612, USA.

Purpose: To examine potential overall survival (OS) differences between males and females with advanced gastric (GAC), gastroesophageal junction (GEJAC) and esophageal (EAC) adenocarcinoma.

Patients And Methods: The study included patients from Kaiser Permanente Northern California with de novo metastatic or relapsed EAC, GEJAC and GAC. We used Cox regression modeling to examine association of sex with OS adjusting for demographics, performance status, Charlson comorbidity index, histology (Lauren's classification), receipt of chemotherapy, and HER2 amplification or overexpression, p53, KRAS, CDKN2A, PIK3CA co-mutations and MYC amplification.

Aim: To optimize the algorithm of diagnosis and treatment of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with comorbid obesity based on a comprehensive analysis of the clinical and functional characteristics of the disease.

Materials And Methods: The study included 150 patients who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy, 24-hour pH-measurement or 24-hour pH-impedancometry of the esophagus. A stratification was carried out basing on the presence of typical GERD complaints and body mass index (BMI).
