Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) as key components in aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) have led to growing incidences of environmental contamination. The aim of this study was to investigate a novel diffusion based passive sampling device comprising of microporous polyethylene (PE) for the long-term time-integrative monitoring of PFASs in groundwater systems. PE passive samplers (PEs) were deployed for 83 d and calibrated at five AFFF impacted groundwater sites representing different PFASs concentration levels (ΣPFAS 0.001 to 0.1 ng mL). Grab samples were collected simultaneously. Linear accumulation of 12 PFASs (r ≥ 0.84) were observed in the PEs over 83 d and PFASs sampling rates were 2-5 mL d. Estimated mean half-times to equilibrium for PFASs ranged between 122 and 490 d. A separate validation study compared PEs and grab sampling during a 93 d field deployment, at seven groundwater sites near a fire fighting training ground. Seventeen PFASs were detected in PEs and fifteen in grab samples. PEs showed higher sensitivity for precursors (i.e. 4:2 FTS and FOSA). Time-weighted-average water concentrations across all validation sites for all PFASs determined from PEs were strongly correlated (r = 0.98) with grab samples, (within range 0.3-60 ng mL PFOS). Results represent the first application of passive sampling technology for the quantitative assessment of PFASs in groundwater systems.

Echolocating bats provide vital ecosystem services and can be monitored effectively using passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) techniques. Duty-cycle subsampling is widely used to collect PAM data at regular ON/OFF cycles to circumvent battery and storage capacity constraints for long-term monitoring. Accurate timing estimates of when participants acquire HIV in HIV prevention trials are necessary for determining antibody levels at acquisition. The Antibody-Mediated Prevention (AMP) Studies showed that a passively administered broadly neutralizing antibody can prevent the acquisition of HIV from a neutralization-sensitive virus. We developed a pipeline for estimating the date of detectable HIV acquisition (DDA) in AMP Study participants using diagnostic and viral sequence data.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of some environment- and animal-based factors, such as body condition score (BCS) on 15-20 days before parturition, parity, and calving season on colostrum dry matter (DM), fat, solids-nonfat (SNF), protein, and lactose contents as well as colostrum and calf's serum immunoglobulin (IgG, IgA, and IgM), IGF-1, and lactoferrin concentrations in buffaloes. Therefore, the components of colostrum (at the first milking) and calf serum samples (at 24-48 h and 28 days after birth) from 86 Anatolian buffalo cows were analyzed by an infrared milk analyzer and ELISA test. The high BCS enhanced colostrum DM, fat, and IgG content; calf serum IgG concentration at 24-48 h, and lactoferrin at 28 days compared to low BCS.
