Article Abstract

Allergy to pomegranate is often associated with severe symptoms. Two allergens have previously been described: 9k-LTP Pun g 1 and pommaclein Pun g 7. This study describes the isolation of a chitinase III, identified by direct protein sequencing and mass spectrometry. It is a 29-kDa protein showing 69% sequence identity with the latex hevamine and IgE binding in dot blotting, immunoblotting and FABERtest. Chitinase-specific IgE were detected in 69 of 357 patients sensitized to one or more pomegranate allergenic preparations present on the FABERtest. Using this test, 19.2% of the patients sensitized to kiwifruit chitinase IV were also sensitized to pomegranate chitinase III, rather than to latex chitinase I (7.2%) with which it shares the N-terminal hevein-like domain. In conclusion, a new allergen has been identified, contributing to improving food allergy diagnosis. This study reveals the important role of chitinases III and IV as allergy sensitizers and prompts further investigations.

Introduction: The role of neuroinflammation in preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains unclear.

Methods: We assessed changes in microglial and astrocytic biomarkers in a well-characterized cohort of 211 cognitively unimpaired individuals. Structural equation modeling was used to simultaneously assess all relationships among microglial and astrocytic responses and AD pathological events.

Background: The microenvironment of diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is devoid of infiltrating lymphocytes and immune checkpoint molecules, with the exception of B7-H3. Here, we studied whether the cancer secretome is a determinant of such tumor phenotype.

Methods: We quantified immune histologic markers in paraffin-embedded DIPG samples and healthy brainstem controls.

Aeromonas spp. cause significant mortality in freshwater giant prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), posing a major challenge to freshwater aquaculture. With growing restrictions on antibiotic use, there is an urgent need for sustainable alternatives to prevent aeromoniasis outbreaks.

The incredibly narrow protein fold bottleneck, which separates the billions of unique proteins on one side to deliver diverse biological functions on the other, arises from folds that tolerate mutations during evolution. One such fold, called the β-trefoil, is present in functionally diverse proteins including cytokines involved in the immune system such as interleukin-1. The unrecognizable sequence-level diversity, even among paralogs of interleukin-1 within the same chromosomal locus, suggests the resilience of this fold to mutational onslaught.

Objective: To investigate the changes in eosinophil counts and the activation of microglial cells in the brain tissues of mice at different stages of infection, and to examine the role of microglia in regulating the progression of angiostrongyliasis and unravel the possible molecular mechanisms.

Methods: Fifty BALB/c mice were randomly divided into the control group and the 7-d, 14-d, 21-day and 25-d infection groups, of 10 mice in each group. All mice in infection groups were infected with 30 stage III larvae by gavage, and animals in the control group was given an equal amount of physiological saline.
