A method based on headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled to gas chromatography-triple quadrupole/mass spectrometry detection (GC-TQ/MS) with a prior derivatization step with O-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl)hydroxylamine hydrochloride (PFBHA) was developed to quantify carbonyl compounds in different categories of Port wines. Optimal extraction conditions were obtained incubating 2 ml of wine with 2.3 g/l of PFBHA for 10 min and extracted during 20 min at 32 °C. The method was validated for 38 carbonyl compounds (alkanals, alkenals, Strecker aldehydes, dialdehydes, ketones and furan aldehydes) with regard to linearity, repeatability, inter and intra-day precision and accuracy, showing that the method is suitable for the determination of carbonyl compounds in wines. Tawny wines with 'indication of age' (10-40 years old) presented the highest levels of some carbonyl compounds, such as propanal, pentanal, hexanal, Strecker aldehydes, diacetyl, methyl glyoxal, 3-pentanone and 2-furfural, whereas Ruby wines were characterized by the highest amounts of some unidentified compounds.

Reducing agents with phosphorus-hydrogen bond, such as sodium hypophosphite, phosphite, and hypophosphorous acid are commercially available in bulk amounts, however, their usage is understudied in organic processes. While NaHPO has proved to be an efficient four-electron reductant in the catalyst-free reductive amination, the influence of cation in hypophosphite salt has not been studied yet. This issue is a fundamentally important factor.

The catalytic asymmetric Mannich reaction is a multicomponent reaction which affords β-amino carbonyl compounds by utilizing an aldehyde, a primary or secondary amine/ammonia, and a ketone. β-amino carbonyl scaffolds are crucial intermediates for the synthesis of naturally occurring bioactive compounds and their derivatives. The synthesized natural compounds exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activities including anti-fungal, anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, anti-HIV, anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities.

In this paper, we investigated the thermal, dynamical, and structural properties, as well as association patterns, in 3-phenyl-1-propanol (3P1Pol) and 3-phenyl-1-propanal (3P1Pal), with special attention paid to the latter compound. Both systems turned out to be good glass formers, differing by 17 K in the glass transition temperature, which indicated a strong change in the self-assembly pattern. This supposition was further confirmed by the analysis of dielectric spectra, where, apart from the α-relaxation, also a unique Debye (D)-mode, being a fingerprint of the self-association, characterized by different dynamical properties (dielectric strength, timescale separation from the α-process), was detected in both samples.

Infrared (IR) spectroscopic imaging combines the molecular specificity of vibrational spectroscopy with imaging capabilities of microscopy, potentially allowing for simultaneous quantitative observations of drugs and cellular response. However, accurately quantifying drug concentration within changing cells is complicated by the overlap between exogenous molecules' and native cellular spectra. Here, we address this challenge by developing a derivative of the widely used chemotherapeutic doxorubicin as a spectral bioprobe (DOX-IR) using a strongly absorbing metal-carbonyl moiety [(Cp)Fe(CO)].

Tea is consumed worldwide, and it is highly appreciated by consumers as a functional, healthy, and natural drink. The objectives of this research were to evaluate (1) the storage stability and (2) the consumption effect on biomarkers of oxidative stress of an antioxidant tea prepared from purple corn cob and stevia (AOxTea). The AOxTea bags were subjected to storage environments of 75 or 85 % of relative humidity at 30, 40 and 50 °C for up to 19 days.
