Chlorination of seawater is one of the most effective technologies for industrial biofouling control. However, chlorination leads to the formation of halogenated chlorination byproducts (CBPs) associated with potential risks to environmental and human health. The present study investigated the occurrence and distribution of CBPs in the Gulf of Fos, a semi-enclosed bay where chlorinated effluents of multiple industrial plants are discharged. Seawater samples (surface and bottom) were collected at 24 sampling stations, with some near industrial outlets and others dispersed throughout the bay. Sediment samples were also collected at 10 sampling stations. Physicochemical parameters including water temperature, pH, salinity, bromide content, and free and total residual oxidant were determined. Several chemical classes of CBPs including trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, haloacetonitriles, trihaloacetaldehydes, and halophenols were analyzed. Bromoform was the most abundant CBP in seawater, and it was detected at most of the sampling stations of the bay with highest concentrations occurring near the industrial effluent outlets. Dibromoacetic acid was the second most abundant CBP at most of the sites followed by dibromoacetonitrile. Other detected CBPs included tribromoacetic acid, bromochloroacetonitrile, and bromal hydrate. To our knowledge, the concentration of the latter CBP was reported here for the first time in the context of industrial seawater chlorination. In sediments, two bromine-containing halophenols (2-chloro-4-bromophenol and 2,4,6-tribromophenol) were detected at two sampling stations. Ecotoxicological assays and risk assessment studies based on the detected environmental concentrations are warranted to elucidate the impacts of marine CBP contamination.

The Perseverance rover has explored and sampled igneous and sedimentary rocks within Jezero Crater to characterize early Martian geological processes and habitability and search for potential biosignatures. Upon entering Neretva Vallis, on Jezero Crater's western edge, Perseverance investigated distinctive mudstone and conglomerate outcrops of the Bright Angel formation. Here we report a detailed geological, petrographic and geochemical survey of these rocks and show that organic-carbon-bearing mudstones in the Bright Angel formation contain submillimetre-scale nodules and millimetre-scale reaction fronts enriched in ferrous iron phosphate and sulfide minerals, likely vivianite and greigite, respectively.

Balancing socio-economic development with environmental quality in estuaries requires reliable tools for ecological assessment and informed management. Although various biological and (geo)chemical indices have been formulated to evaluate ecological quality status (EcoQS), transitional systems such as estuaries remain challenging to assess due to steep natural gradients and intense anthropogenic pressures, which can compromise the effectiveness of conventional indices. This study applied a practical, multi-criteria sediment assessment to evaluate benthic EcoQS in the Sado estuary, SW Portugal - a socio-ecological system strongly influenced by human activity.

Study Question: Does weight loss from a hypocaloric dietary intervention improve antral follicle dynamics in women with PCOS?
Summary Answer: During a 3-month hypocaloric dietary intervention, women with PCOS who experienced clinically meaningful weight loss showed more organized antral follicle development including fewer recruitment events, but no change in the overall frequency of selection, dominance, or ovulation.
What Is Known Already: There is a spectrum of disordered antral follicle development in women with PCOS including excessive follicle recruitment and turnover, decreased frequency of selection and dominance, and failure of ovulation. Lifestyle intervention aimed at weight loss is recommended to improve metabolic health in women with PCOS yet benefits on ovarian follicle development and ovulation are unclear.

While soil microorganisms underpin terrestrial ecosystem functioning, how their functional potential adapts across environmental gradients remains poorly understood, particularly for ubiquitous taxa. Employing a comprehensive metagenomic approach across China's six major terrestrial ecosystems (41 topsoil samples, 0-20 cm depth), we reveal a counterintuitive pattern: oligotrophic environments (deserts, karst) harbor microbiomes with significantly greater metabolic pathway diversity (KEGG) compared to resource-rich ecosystems. We provide a systematic catalog of key functional genes governing biogeochemical cycles in these soils, identifying: 6 core CAZyme genes essential for soil organic carbon (SOC) decomposition and biosynthesis; 62 nitrogen (N)-cycling genes (KOs) across seven critical enzymatic clusters; 15 sulfur (S)-cycling genes (KOs) within three key enzymatic clusters.

This experiment evaluated the effects of supplementing yeast culture ( ) on in situ ruminal degradability, rumen fermentation and microbiota responses of heifers consuming a forage-based diet. Twelve ruminally-cannulated Angus-influenced heifers were ranked by body weight ( 180 ± 4 kg) and assigned to 4 groups of 3 heifers each.
