Background: Prospective trials have demonstrated the advantage of dose-escalated radiotherapy for the biochemical and clinical control of intermediate risk prostate cancer. Dose escalation improves outcomes but increases risks of urinary and bowel toxicity. Recently the contribution of "spacers" positioned in the septum between the rectum and the prostate could improve the functional results of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). To date most of the evaluated devices were polyethylen glycol (PEG) and hyaluronic acid (HA). Men on the Spacer arm had decreased bowel toxicity and less decline in both urinary and bowel quality of life as compared to Control men in a randomized trial.
Methods: This is an interventional, multi-center study to evaluate the use of biodegradable inflatable balloon for patients with intermediate risk prostate cancer treated by IMRT (74 to 80 Gy, 2 Gy/fraction) with daily image guided radiotherapy.
Discussion: This multicenter prospective study will yield new data regarding dosimetric gain and implantation stages of Bioprotect balloon. Acute and late toxicities and quality of life will be registered too.
Trial Registration: NCT02478112 , date of registration: 15/06/2015.

To analyze in-hospital mortality in children undergoing congenital heart interventions in the only public referral center in Amazonas, North Brazil, between 2014 and 2022. This retrospective cohort study included 1041 patients undergoing cardiac interventions for congenital heart disease, of whom 135 died during hospitalization. Records were reviewed to obtain demographic, clinical, and surgical data.

Identifying the risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE) in geriatric patients with cirrhosis remains challenging. This study aimed to investigate the independent factors for OHE development in geriatric cirrhosis and to establish a simple scoring model to identify individuals at risk for OHE. We conducted a retrospective review of geriatric patients with cirrhosis aged ≥ 80 years who were admitted between April 2006 and November 2022.

Low molecular weight amines promote sulfate (SO and HSO) formation through acid-base reactions, contributing to fine particulate matter (PM). Heterogeneous ozonation converts nontoxic amine salts into highly toxic products, yet the ozonation activation mechanism is unclear. This work reveals a sulfate-dominant ozonation mechanism of amine salts in fine PM by combining advanced mass spectrometry and ab initio calculation methods.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of organic salts with melting points below 100°C. Owing to their unique chemical and physical properties, they are used as solvents and catalysts in various chemical transformations, progressively replacing common volatile organic solvents (VOCs) in green synthetic applications. However, their intrinsic ionic nature can restrict the use of mass spectrometric techniques to monitor the time progress of a reaction occurring in an IL medium, thus preventing one from following the formation of the reaction products or intercepting the reaction intermediates.

Background: Risk stratification in posterior circulation ischemic stroke (PCIS) is challenging. Although the Posterior Circulation Ischemic Stroke Outcome Score (PCISOS) was developed to address this, its utility in minor PCIS and in identifying homogeneous populations for clinical trials or treatment-responsive subgroups remains uncertain.
Methods: CHANCE-2 (Clopidogrel in High-Risk Patients With Acute Non-disabling Cerebrovascular Events-II) was a multicenter, randomized trial that enrolled patients with minor stroke or high-risk transient ischemic attack who carried CYP2C19 loss-of-function alleles.
