Article Abstract

Vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), an important metabolite of catecholamines that is routinely screened as tumor marker, was investigated by the various spectroscopic techniques (IR, Raman, UV-Vis, antioxidant decolorization assay and NMR). Structures optimized by the employment of five common functionals (M05-2X, M06-2X, B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, B3LYP-D3) were compared with the crystallographic data. The M05-2X functional reproduced the most reliable experimental bond lengths and angles (correlation coefficient >0.999). The importance of intramolecular hydrogen bonds for structural stability was discussed and quantified by the NBO analysis. The most prominent bands in vibrational spectrum were analyzed and compared to the experimental data. The positions of the carbon and hydrogen atoms in NMR spectra were well reproduced. The differences in UV-Vis spectrum were investigated by adding the explicit solvent and by performing NBO and QTAIM analyses. The discrepancy in the two spectra of about 50nm could be explained by the solvent effect on carboxyl group. The most probable antioxidant activity mechanism was discussed for VMA and its carboxylate anion. The Molecular Docking study with the C - reactive protein additionally proved that variety of functional groups present in VMA and its anion allowed strong hydrogen and hydrophobic interactions.

Urinary homovanillic acid (HVA) and vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) are widely used diagnostic markers for neuroblastoma, but urinary markers for risk assessment prior to invasive biopsy are lacking. We hypothesized that cystathionine (CTN) may be a new neuroblastoma biomarker and evaluated its utility for diagnosis and pretreatment risk assessment. 80 participants provided 202 urine samples: 32 from 32 control participants, 29 from 29 patients with primary neuroblastoma, and 141 from 30 patients with residual tumors, 11 of whom had primary neuroblastoma.

Aim of the study This study aims to report our institutional outcomes of laparoscopic adrenalectomy, to compare these with a cohort of patients undergoing open adrenalectomy, and to describe the feasibility and utility of technical modifications, including modified port positioning and the use of intra-abdominal gauze retractors. Patients and methods This retrospective cohort study included 83 patients with radiologically benign-appearing adrenal tumors who underwent adrenalectomy at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Cairo University, Cairo, Egypt, between January 2014 and January 2020. Patient data were extracted from medical records and included demographics (age and gender), lesion characteristics (size, laterality, and functional status), surgical approach (laparoscopic or open), and results of endocrine investigations (serum metanephrines, urinary vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), aldosterone, cortisol, sodium, and potassium).

Background: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are ubiquitous gaseous chemicals emitted from multiple sources and present in both indoor and outdoor air. VOC exposures have been linked to detrimental cardiometabolic effects; nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between VOC exposure and sympathetic activation.

Monoamines play essential roles in regulating brain functions, influencing behaviours and physiological processes. Despite significant advances in mammalian models, studies on reptiles are limited, restricting our understanding of their neurochemical and behavioural interactions. This study aimed to develop and validate a selective liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the simultaneous quantification of 11 monoamines and their metabolites (adrenaline, dopamine, levodopa, homovanillic acid, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, 5-hydroxytryptophan, serotonin, norepinephrine, tryptophan, tyrosine, vanillylmandelic acid) in lizard brains, examining interspecies and sex-specific variations and their potential link to behavioural differences between Podarcis siculus and Podarcis melisellensis.

Neuroblastomas represent a diverse group of neuroblastic tumors characterized by variability in their clinical progression and degree of differentiation. In rare cases, patients with neuroblastoma may present with paraneoplastic syndromes, such as watery diarrhea, hypokalemia, and achlorhydria (WDHA syndrome), linked to the secretion of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). We report a case of a 14-month-old girl presented with a three-week history of watery diarrhea and signs of dehydration with no other symptoms.
