Effect of Exogenous Melatonin Supply on Potato Plants Grown In Vitro.

Antioxidants (Basel)

July 2025

Complex Systems and Microbiome-Innovations Centre, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management, University of Debrecen, 4032 Debrecen, Hungary.

Plant growth regulators of natural origin are becoming increasingly important in crop production to protect plants against various abiotic stresses and often to modulate plant pathological processes. These compounds offer the potential to enhance plant health exogenously by protecting plants against oxidative stress. Melatonin has been studied previously; however, the role of exogenous melatonin in abiotic stress tolerance and the underlying mechanisms are still less understood.

Isolation of Verrucosins A-E from a Marine sp. Reveals a Unifying Biosynthetic Hypothesis for Linear and Macrocyclic Polyketides.

Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, California 92093, United States.

As part of our long-standing program evaluating the biosynthetic complexity and biomedical potential of natural products from marine microbes, our attention was drawn to culture extracts from a sp. (strain TAA-831), which produced multiple compounds with unique UV absorbance signatures and HRMS data. Large-scale fermentation and targeted isolation afforded verrucosins A-E (), a mixture of linear and macrocyclic polyketides whose structures were determined through a synergistic combination of experimental, computational, and genomic approaches.

The mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) has been widely used to infer the phylogeny, origin and evolution of Orthopteran insects. Although several mitogenomic data have been used to study the phylogenetic relationships of Tetrigoidea (Orthoptera), the phylogenetic status of several subfamilies and tribes was still unclear due to the limited sampling of taxon. To further analyze the mitogenomic features and phylogeny of Tetrigoidea, five mitogenomes (, , , and ) were sequenced and analyzed in this study, with being the newly published mitogenome and and being the complete mitogenomes.

Thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAAs) pose a significant health burden due to their asymptomatic progression, often culminating in life-threatening aortic rupture, and due to the lack of effective pharmacological treatments. Risk factors include elevated hemodynamic stress on the ascending aorta, frequently associated with hypertension and hereditary genetic mutations. Among the hereditary causes, Marfan syndrome is the most prevalent, characterized as a connective tissue disorder driven by mutations that lead to life-threatening thoracic aortic ruptures.

Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) significantly endangers the lives of individuals with Marfan syndrome (MFS), yet the intricacies of their biomechanical origins remain elusive. Our investigation delves into the pivotal role of hemodynamic disturbance in the pathogenesis of TAA, with a particular emphasis on the mechanistic contributions of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling cascade. We uncovered that activation of the mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) within smooth muscle cells, instigated by the oscillatory wall shear stress (OSS) that stems from disturbed flow (DF), is a catalyst for TAA progression.
