Parabens are common preservatives and environmental hormones. As such, possible detrimental health effects could be amplified through their widespread use in foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products. Thus, the determination of parabens in such products is of particular importance. This study explored vortex-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction techniques based on the solidification of a floating organic drop (VA-DLLME-SFO) and salt-assisted cloud point extraction (SA-CPE) for paraben extraction. Microanalysis was performed using a capillary liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection system. These techniques were modified successfully to determine four parabens in 19 commercial products. The regression equations of these parabens exhibited good linearity (r=0.998, 0.1-10μg/mL), good precision (RSD<5%) and accuracy (RE<5%), reduced reagent consumption and reaction times (<6min), and excellent sample versatility. VA-DLLME-SFO was also particularly convenient due to the use of a solidified extract. Thus, the VA-DLLME-SFO technique was better suited to the extraction of parabens from complex matrices.

Over the last several years, there has been an influx of α-agonists into the street drug supply, beginning with the proliferation of xylazine, a potent veterinary sedative. Since 2023, another sedative, medetomidine, has been widely detected. Medetomidine, broadly, encompasses two enantiomers-dexmedetomidine and levomedetomidine-with the dex enantiomer being pharmacologically active and present in human-use pharmaceuticals.

Background/objectives: Vinegar-egg is a traditional health-promoting beverage prepared by soaking eggs in vinegar. While both eggs and vinegar are common dietary components with well-documented nutritional and pharmacological activities, eggs treated with vinegar have been rarely studied. This study aims to identify and characterize bioactive compounds in vinegar-egg and investigate their potential wound-healing activities.

: Dermatitis is frequently treated with dexamethasone cutaneous application, which causes adverse effects mainly when it is chronically administered. Sesamol is a phytochemical compound known for its anti-inflammatory activity and low toxicity. Therefore, this study reports the optimization of a guar gum hydrogel with enhanced physicochemical and microbiological stability, providing an effective dosage form for topical application of sesamol nanocapsules to treat irritant contact dermatitis.

Background: With daily exposure to multiple endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), understanding individualized co-exposure patterns could better identify chemicals that threaten health. This is particularly pertinent for the vulnerable fetus during in-utero development, where exposure can have long lasting health consequences. As there is limited information of EDC exposure in Asian maternal-offspring populations, this study aimed to (1) determine levels of a selected range of EDCs (focusing on Substances of Very High Concern by the European Chemical Agency) in maternal and corresponding cord blood plasma, (2) investigate the sociodemographic factors associated with plasma EDC concentrations, and (3) associate EDC-mixtures with birthweight, in a Singapore cohort.

FnsA, a fungal nonribosomal peptide-polyketide synthase hybrid (NRPS-PKS), catalyzes the conversion of -hydroxybenzoic acid (-HBA) or -coumaric acid (-CA) into naringenin. The ketoreductase (KR) and dehydratase (DH) within FnsA are pivotal in this process. Here, we demonstrate that FnsA and FnsA exhibit distinct functional states (active or inactive) during the naringenin biosynthesis.
