Article Abstract

A wide variety of approaches have become available for the fabrication of nanomaterials with increasing degrees of complexity, precision, and speed while minimizing cost. Their quantitative characterization, however, remains a challenge. Analytical methods to better inspect and validate the structure and composition of large nanoscale objects are required to optimize their applications in diverse technologies. Here, we describe single-molecule fluorescence-based strategies relying on photobleaching and multiple-color co-localization features toward the characterization of supramolecular structures. By optimizing imaging conditions, including surface passivation, excitation power, frame capture rate, fluorophore choice, buffer media, and antifading agents, we have built a robust method by which to dissect the structure of synthetic nanoscale systems. We showcase the use of our methods by retrieving key structural parameters of four DNA nanotube systems differing in their preparation strategy. Our method rapidly and accurately assesses the outcome of synthetic work building nano- and mesoscale architectures, providing a key tool for product studies in nanomaterial synthesis.

The complexation of V(IV, V) species with 2,4-substituted derivatives of 6,7-dihydroxybenzopyrylium bromide has been studied. The stoichiometry of the interaction products in the studied systems M : L = 1 : 3 was established by classical spectrophotometric methods. It was shown that the introduction of phenyl substituents at positions 2 and 4 of the benzopyrylium fragment leads to a shift of complexation to a more acidic region, an increase in the stability of the reaction products, and an increase in their molar absorptivity.

A growing body of literature suggests that the effects of host diet on populations of parasites within a host (i.e., infrapopulations) are dictated by the elemental stoichiometry of the parasite, and new data suggest that the stoichiometric composition of parasites can shift in response to a host's diet.

Incorporating polar functionality into C(sp3)─H bonds in isotactic polypropylene (iPP) without compromising its molecular weight during post-polymerization modification has long been a challenge due to competing chain degradation reactions. Here, a facile, radically mediated approach is presented that enables chain functionalization without chain scission. To achieve this, a photocatalytic process is designed that operates under mild conditions, maintaining iPP in a gel state.

The nanostructural features of a mechanically alloyed Sb-doped (TiZr)HfNiSn thermoelectric (TE) Half-Heusler (HH) compound were addressed using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy measurements and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The EXAFS measurements at the Ni-, Sn- Zr- and Hf--edge were implemented in an effort to reveal the influence of Hf and Zr incorporation into the crystal with respect to their previously measured TE properties. The substitution of Ti by Hf and Zr is expected to yield local lattice distortions due to the different atomic sizes of the dopants or/and electronic charge redistribution amongst the cations.

The co-substitution of neodymium (Nd) and iron (Fe) into CaSnO provides, for the first time, the double perovskite-like structure NdCaFeSnO. A comprehensive investigation of the structural, microstructural, vibrational (Raman), optical and electrical properties of the resulting NdCaFeSnO compound, synthesized a solid-state method, is reported. Elemental analysis using Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) confirmed the successful incorporation of Nd, Fe, Ca, Sn and O.
