We designed and demonstrated a single-legged or unipedal walker that has a "cleat" that allows it to persistently associate with a track and make autonomous decisions about movement. The walker is highly processive over long periods of time, as shown by its movement over a microparticle surface suffused with substrate. The simple design can be readily optimized on the basis of simple energetic considerations. The walker can be used for signal amplification and should prove especially valuable for programming amorphous computations within chemical reaction networks.

A twice-walk strategy based on a three-dimensional (3D) cleat-equipped DNA walking machine with a high signal amplification efficiency was investigated for ultrasensitive detection of miRNA. Impressively, addition of duplex-specific nuclease (DSN) just once drove the twice-walk strategy, making the strategy simpler. With the advantages of being simple, rapid and ultrasensitive, the biosensor offers potential for use in early clinical diagnosis.

We report a simple, effective method of managing displaced unilateral condylar fractures with occlusal disruption using vacuum-formed thermoplastic foil splints with bonded wire cleats. The cleats enable intermaxillary fixation in the form of orthodontic elastics to be used, which guide then maintain the occlusion in centric relation. A case is presented in which this technique was used successfully.

Compomers are a new class of materials reportedly having the anticariogenicity and the bonding ability to metals similar to glass ionomers while maintaining the high esthetic qualities of composite resins. The purpose of this study was to determine and evaluate the shear bond strength and fracture pattern of a compomer (Dyract) to stainless steel crowns (SSCs) using different mechanical and chemical retention procedures for possible future development of a chair-side technique of producing esthetic SSCs. Thirty-two Unitek SSCs, divided into four groups, were mounted in autopolymerizing acrylic resin so that the resulting specimen has the crown's flat lingual surface projecting above and parallel to the top surface of the acrylic resin block.
