The aim of the present article was to study the spermatogenic cycle of Mytilus galloprovincialis collected in the Bay of Naples during a whole year and to acquire new insights into the mechanism of control. Knowledge of the Mytilus cycle in this geographic area is of particular interest as, to the best of our knowledge, the male gonad cycle has been hitherto unexplored. Testis organization was evaluated together with the localization of the enzymes 3β-HSD, 17β-HSD, and P450-aromatase, which are strictly connected to the synthesis of two key hormones involved in the testis activity: testosterone and 17β-estradiol. It was demonstrated that: (1) the spermatogenic cycle starts in late Summer-early Fall and continues until early Winter, when the first spawning occurs; after rapid gonad restoration, several spawning events take place until June, when the testis becomes non-active again; (2) in the testis, true Leydig and Sertoli cells are present; (3) during the reproductive period, Sertoli, Leydig, germ, and adipogranular cells (ADGs) are positive to 3β-HSD and 17β-HSD, while only germ cells are positive to P450 aromatase; by contrast, during the resting period, only ADGs are positive to 3β-HSD and 17β-HSD, and P450-aromatase is no longer recognizable. While the potential microplastic toxicity has attracted considerable research attention, studies on its chronic reproductive effects in male mammals remain limited. Here, we investigated the chronic reproductive toxicity of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs, 5 μm) and polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs, 20 nm) both in vitro, using GC2 cells, and in vivo, employing male C57 mice. Histopathological analysis revealed dilated seminiferous tubules, disorganized spermatocytes, and reduced spermatocyte counts in treated groups.

The complete cycle of receptacle development in the parasitic barnacle Parasacculina pilosella (Van Kampen and Boschma, 1925) (Rhizocephala: Polyascidae) was studied by light and electron microscopy. This rhizocephalan has two globular receptacles located outside the visceral sac. Two variants of development of the receptacles from the same externa were observed: (1) with both receptacles fertile and (2) with one of them (usually larger one) fertile and the other sterile.

Osteopontin (OPN) is a highly phosphorylated glycoprotein expressed in several cells, tissues, and tissue fluids, including the male reproductive system. Recent studies have indicated that OPN may be a potential fertility marker in male dogs. However, OPN expression and localization during testicular growth are still unclear, and the effect of pharmacological castration on testicular OPN expression in male dogs has not been studied to date.

Spermatogenesis in teleost fishes is organized into highly specialized cystic units, wherein Sertoli cells encapsulate and support cohorts of synchronously developing germ cells-a structural and functional arrangement that contrasts markedly with the non-cystic seminiferous epithelium of amniotes, in which Sertoli cells simultaneously interact with multiple germ cell stages. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive morphological and stereological analysis of spermatogenesis in the common carp (Cyprinus carpio), a species of considerable economic relevance to aquaculture. Our investigation delineated the progression of germ cell development across the proliferative, meiotic, and spermiogenic phases, identifying nine distinct spermatogonial generations.

Amorphous silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) have gradually been established to pose a threat to male reproductive health, but the underlying mechanisms are not yet fully elucidated. Ferroptosis is an emerging programmed cell death mechanism associated with spermatogenic disorders. Here, we examined how ferroptosis contributes to SiNP-induced male reproductive damage and assessed the regulatory role of the BRCA1/GPX4 axis in this context.
