Article Abstract

Respiratory patterns are influenced and altered by various emotional changes. In the present study, we investigated how respiratory patterns differ from individual to individual during quiet breathing. We examined the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and various respiratory parameters in 16 healthy male subjects. Tidal volume was significantly larger and respiratory rate (RR) was significantly higher in both the higher trait (HT) and higher state (HS) anxiety groups compared to the lower trait and lower state anxiety groups. Inspiratory (T ) and expiratory time (T ) was significantly shorter in both the HT and HS anxiety groups. There was no significant difference in minute ventilation between these two groups. End-tidal CO%, heart rate, and oxygen uptake ([Formula: see text]) also showed no significant differences. V showed a negative correlation and RR showed a positive correlation with trait scores. T and T showed a negative correlation with trait anxiety scores. However, no other respiratory parameter showed any correlation. These results suggest that the respiratory rhythm reflected by RR is affected by the activity generated in the higher center in accordance with the level of trait anxiety during quiet breathing in awake humans.

Mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MI-E) consists of increasing expiratory air flow, thereby promoting an increase in cough peak flow (CPF) and secretion clearance. Respiratory impairment, characterized by reduced lung volumes and ineffective cough, is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This study aimed to assess the acute effects of MI-E on CPF and chest wall compartmental and operational volumes in patients with ALS.

Importance: Cervical tracheal characteristics in OSAHS patients remain unclear.

Objective: This study aimed to analysis the cervical tracheal characteristics of obstructive sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS) patients using ultrasound.

Methods: One hundred and thirteen patients with OSAHS and 113 age-, sex-, height-, weight-, and BMI-matched healthy controls underwent cervical tracheal sonographic examination.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the limitations of pulse oximetry in detecting occult hypoxemia. The superiority of the alveolar gas monitor (AGM) compared to pulse oximetry (SpO) in predicting respiratory deterioration among COVID-19-positive individuals has previously been demonstrated. Here, we combine COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 individuals as a combined cohort of participants to determine if the AGM has similar utility across a larger, more generalizable cohort.

The developmental capacity of bovine embryos produced in vitro (IVP) is often reduced due to suboptimal culture conditions, inducing oxidative and endoplastmatic reticulum (ER) stress. Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), a chemical chaperone, has shown potential to improve embryo developmental potential sustainably. However, its mechanistic effects remain unclear.

Hereditary hemochromatosis is characterized by excessive iron absorption through the gut and its deposition in the body. In many instances, symptoms do not arise until significant organ damage has occurred. Diagnosing a case of hereditary hemochromatosis is difficult even after the appearance of symptoms due to the diverse clinical presentations.
