Article Abstract

The first member, Y(OH)(BH)Cl·4.98HO, of a new family of boron-containing substances, closo-dodecaborate intercalated layered rare-earth hydroxides, was synthesized using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The structure and composition of this compound were studied by X-ray diffraction, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, thermal analysis, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The title compound had the composition Y(OH)(BH)Cl·4.98HO and crystallized in a form of plate-like, aggregated particles less than 10 nm thick. The coordination of closo-dodecaborate anions with yttrium hydroxide host layers was demonstrated.

In this work, we discuss the synthesis and characterization of a 2D coordination polymer composed of a dianionic perhydroxylated boron cluster, [B(OH)], coordinated to Zn(II)-the first example of a transition metal-coordinated [B(OH)] compound. This material was synthesized cation exchange from the starting cesium salt and then subjected to rigorous characterization prior to and after thermal activation. Numerous techniques, including XRD, FTIR, SEM, TGA, and solid-state NMR revealed a 2D coordination polymer composed of sheets of Zn(II) ions intercalated between planes of boron clusters.

The development of 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives as DNA-targeting anticancer agents is a rapidly growing area and has resulted in several derivatives entering into clinical trials. One of original recent developments is the use of boron clusters: carboranes and metallacarboranes in the design of pharmacologically active molecules. In this direction several naphthalimide-carborane and metallacarborane conjugates were synthesized in the present study.

Rechargeable magnesium battery has been widely considered as a potential alternative to current Li-ion technology. However, the lack of appropriate cathode with high-energy density and good sustainability hinders the realization of competitive magnesium cells. Recently, a new concept of hybrid battery coupling metal magnesium anode with a cathode undergoing the electrochemical cycling of a secondary ion has received increased attention.
