Echolocating bats provide vital ecosystem services and can be monitored effectively using passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) techniques. Duty-cycle subsampling is widely used to collect PAM data at regular ON/OFF cycles to circumvent battery and storage capacity constraints for long-term monitoring. However, the impact of duty-cycle subsampling and potential detector errors on estimating bat activity has not been systematically investigated for bats.

In a world filled with clatter, chatter, and noises of all sorts, as well as advancing technologies that increasingly put up barriers of distance and time between persons, including ideologic differences that seemingly block communication before it starts, the notion of listening is laden with innuendo and meaning. In this column, the gift of listening in teaching-learning was explored, gleaning insights from the arts and experiences in teaching-learning. In discussing the importance of listening in the teaching-learning of nursing, the humanbecoming teaching-learning model provided the foundation for suggestions for teachers of nursing to consider.

Introduction: Research on listening to podcasts while driving suggested no significant difference compared to undistracted listening. However, these studies were conducted in non-controlled driving environments, limiting the evaluation of the environment's impact. This study aimed to compare knowledge acquisition and retention among resident physicians and undergraduate students while listening to medical education podcasts in a controlled, simulator-based, driving environment versus an undistracted listening condition.

Processing delays can negatively affect listening experience, especially in cases where the (processed) delayed sound interferes with an un-delayed (or direct) sound component, as it is the case for (open-fit) hearing devices. In this study, psychometric functions for delay perception in individual frequency bands were measured. Also, it was assessed how noticeability adds up across frequency bands for frequency-dependent processing delays.

Sound influences motor functions and sound perception is conversely modulated by locomotion. Accumulating evidence supports an interconnection between the auditory system and the basal ganglia (BG), which has functional implications on the interaction between the two systems. Substantial evidence now supports auditory cortex and auditory thalamus inputs to the tri-laminar region of the tail of the striatum (tTS) in rodents.
