Characterizing How Pediatric Clinicians Create Choice Awareness When Performing Shared Decision-Making.

Acad Pediatr

August 2025

Division of Bioethics and Palliative and Division of General Pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics, University of Washington School of Medicine and Treuman Katz Center for Pediatric Bioethics and Palliative Care, Seattle Children's Research Institute, 1900 Ninth Ave, M/S: JMB-6; Seattle, WA, USA 9810

Objective: To characterize how clinicians create choice awareness when performing shared decision-making (SDM).

Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional observational study designed to characterize the decision-making processes of parents and clinicians across a range of medical decisions in different pediatric settings. For the observational study, clinicians were recruited from 6 pediatric specialties (craniofacial, hematology and oncology, hospital medicine, neonatology, pulmonary, and sports medicine) at a single US children's hospital.

A precise performance-based reimbursement model for the multi-centre NAPKON cohorts - development and evaluation.

Sci Rep

June 2024

Goethe University Frankfurt, University Hospital, Center for Internal Medicine, Medical Department 2 (Hematology/Oncology and Infectious Diseases), Theodor-Stern-Kai 7, 60596, Frankfurt, Germany.

Fair allocation of funding in multi-centre clinical studies is challenging. Models commonly used in Germany - the case fees ("fixed-rate model", FRM) and up-front staffing and consumables ("up-front allocation model", UFAM) lack transparency and fail to suitably accommodate variations in centre performance. We developed a performance-based reimbursement model (PBRM) with automated calculation of conducted activities and applied it to the cohorts of the National Pandemic Cohort Network (NAPKON) within the Network of University Medicine (NUM).

Cell migration plays important roles in many biological processes, but how migrating cells orchestrate intracellular molecules and subcellular structures to regulate their speed and direction is still not clear. Here, by characterizing the intracellular diffusion and the three-dimensional lamellipodium structures of fish keratocyte cells, we observe a strong positive correlation between the intracellular diffusion and cell migration speed and, more importantly, discover a switching of cell migration modes with reversible intracellular diffusion variation and lamellipodium structure deformation. Distinct from the normal fast mode, cells migrating in the newly-found slow mode have a deformed lamellipodium with swollen-up front and thinned-down rear, reduced intracellular diffusion and compartmentalized macromolecule distribution in the lamellipodium.

Extranodal NK-/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTCL) is a rare and highly aggressive malignancy with significant racial and geographic variations worldwide. In addition to the formerly "nasal-type" initial description, these lymphomas are predominantly extranodal in origin and typically cause vascular damage and tissue destruction, and although not fully understood, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has an important role in its pathogenesis. Initial assessment must include a hematopathology review of representative and viable tumor areas without necrosis for adequate immunohistochemistry studies, including EBV-encoded small RNA (EBER) hybridization (ISH).

Anti-spike binding antibody (Ab) levels are used by some providers to inform COVID-19 risk assessment for solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs). As has been observed with other Ab assays, in the setting of high binding Ab, quantitative results may demonstrate artifactually low values (i.e.
