A novel, simple and reliable method based on micellar electrokinetic chromatography with ultraviolet detection was developed to analyze idebenone in a pediatric formulation. Idebenone is a synthetic short chain benzoquinone that acts as an electron carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain facilitating the production of adenosine triphosphate. It can be found in two different redox states that differ in their physiological properties. Idebenone has been investigated as a treatment in several neurological disorders like Friedreich's ataxia, Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy, mitochondrial encephalomyopathies and senile dementia. Accordingly, a micellar electrokinetic chromatography was employed to discriminate both redox forms. The final optimized system was validated in terms of selectivity, linearity (r2 0.992), limit of detection (0.5 µg/mL), limit of quantification (1.8 µg/mL), intra- and inter-day precision (RSD ≤ 2) and accuracy in terms of recovery studies (99.3-100.5%). Robustness was studied following a Plackett-Burman design. Finally, the validated system was applied to the analysis of idebenone in a pediatric formulation.

The fixed-dose combination (FDC) of ibuprofen (IBU) and paracetamol (PAR) has emerged as a preferred option in pain management, owing to its distinct practical advantages. Both drugs have well-documented efficacy and safety profiles, providing synergistic pain relief through complementary mechanisms of action. IBU not only offers central analgesic effects but also inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, particularly COX-1 and COX-2, thereby reducing prostaglandin synthesis at the site of pain to deliver both analgesic and anti-inflammatory benefits.

To enhance the signal intensity of kynurenines, which are present at trace concentrations in biological fluids, a novel analytical approach was developed, combining pressure-assisted electrokinetic injection (PAEKI) with a mixed micelle system based on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and Brij-35. The method was applied to key compounds of the kynurenine pathway, including L-tryptophan, kynurenine, 3-hydroxykynurenine, and kynurenic acid, as well as to the aromatic amino acids (AAs) L-tyrosine and L-phenylalanine. This study presents a fast method for the characterization of solute-solvent interactions in micellar and microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography based on the linear solvation energy relationships proposed by Abraham. The magnitude of the different types of interactions between solutes and chromatographic phases is determined from the differences in migration observed for pairs of solutes, and the effect of the different cohesion of the dispersed phase and the dispersive medium is determined from the injection of a mixture of homologous compounds, using in all injections nonanophenone as dispersed phase marker. For excess polarizability interactions (e), the compounds 8-hydroxyquinoline and 1,2-dimethoxybenzene are used.

Online micelle to cyclodextrin stacking (MCDS) was demonstrated to preconcentrate neutral propiconazole enantiomers and atrazine, followed by separation under suppressed EOF MEKC. Stacking occurred at the boundary between SDS micelle-bound analytes and neutral alpha-cyclodextrin (α-CD), where the analytes were released upon formation of inclusion complexes between SDS micelles and α-CD. The SDS concentration in the sample matrix, the ratio of α-CD and sample solution injection time, and the electrokinetic sample injection voltage during MCDS were optimized.
