'Fuji' is one of the most popular and highly-produced apple cultivars worldwide, and has been frequently used in breeding programs. The development of genotypic markers for the preferable phenotypes of 'Fuji' is required. Here, we aimed to define the haplotypes of 'Fuji' and find associations between haplotypes and phenotypes of five traits (harvest day, fruit weight, acidity, degree of watercore, and flesh mealiness) by using 115 accessions related to 'Fuji'. Through the re-sequencing of 'Fuji' genome, total of 2,820,759 variants, including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and insertions or deletions (indels) were detected between 'Fuji' and 'Golden Delicious' reference genome. We selected mapping-validated 1,014 SNPs, most of which were heterozygous in 'Fuji' and capable of distinguishing alleles inherited from the parents of 'Fuji' (i.e., 'Ralls Janet' and 'Delicious'). We used these SNPs to define the haplotypes of 'Fuji' and trace their inheritance in relatives, which were shown to have an average of 27% of 'Fuji' genome. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) based on 'Fuji' haplotypes identified one quantitative trait loci (QTL) each for harvest time, acidity, degree of watercore, and mealiness. A haplotype from 'Delicious' chr14 was considered to dominantly cause watercore, and one from 'Ralls Janet' chr1 was related to low-mealiness.

Aim: This study explores the evolving landscape of gastrectomy procedures in Japan, based on nationwide surveys conducted in 2014 and 2021. It highlights changes in surgical approaches, including a growing focus on minimally invasive and function-preserving procedures, as well as the increasing consideration of postoperative quality of life (QOL).
Methods: Two nationwide questionnaire surveys were conducted in 2014 and 2021, targeting members of the Japanese Society for Gastro-surgical Pathophysiology.

Background: Sacubitril/valsartan is typically prescribed for patients with heart failure and hypertension. We previously reported that sacubitril/valsartan provides comparable blood pressure (BP) reduction and superior tolerability compared to thiazide diuretics. This post hoc study aimed to compare the effects of sacubitril/valsartan and thiazide diuretics in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Fruit drop, cracking, and advanced ripening prior to fruit harvest can promote significant losses in important apple cultivars such as 'Ambrosia' and 'Fuji' grown in the mid-Atlantic. These losses result from environmental factors, delays in harvest due to the lack of red skin color development, and cultivar-specific characteristics, among others. Aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) are ethylene-inhibiting plant growth regulators (PGRs) that can alter preharvest fruit drop, cracking, maturity, and quality by impeding ethylene biosynthesis and perception, respectively.

Osteoporosis is a common condition, and treatment can reduce the risk of fracture and extend healthy life expectancy, but most cases go undiagnosed and untreated. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis, is costly, time-consuming, and labor-intensive, with limited availability in low-resource settings and small clinics, so it is not suitable for screening for potential osteoporosis. To address this problem, in recent years, some studies have attempted to screen for osteoporosis by estimating DXA bone mineral density (BMD) from chest radiographs (CR), which are frequently used in daily clinical practice, by applying deep learning technology.

Background: Astaxanthin Z-isomers have attracted much attention because recent studies have demonstrated that they exhibit greater bioavailability and biological activity than the naturally predominant all-E-isomer. However, the plasma appearance and tissue distribution of astaxanthin isomers when administered with a diet rich in astaxanthin Z-isomers are largely unknown. To understand the health benefits and safety of astaxanthin Z-isomers, it is important to study the in vivo kinetics of the isomers.
