Article Abstract

Background: Experimental and computational characterizations in the preclinical development of biomedical devices are complementary and can significantly help in a thorough analysis of the performances before clinical evaluation.

Methodology: Here mechanical and drug delivery properties of a polymer platform, ad hoc prepared to obtain coatings for drug-eluting stents, is reported; polymer formulation and starting drug loading were varied to study the behavior of the platform; a finite element model was constructed starting from experimental data.

Results: Different platform formulations affected mechanical and drug transport properties; these properties can be fine tuned by varying the starting platform formulation. Finite element analysis allowed visualizing drug distribution maps over time in biological tissues for different commercial stents and polymer platform formulations.

The phase transformation of single-element systems is a fundamental natural process with broad implications, yet many aspects remain puzzling despite their simplicity. For instance, transition metals, Tantalum (Ta) and Zirconium (Zr), commonly form body-centred cubic crystals when supercooled. However, according to large-scale computer simulations, their crystallisation rates can differ by over 100 times.

Rapid sand filtration is typically used at water treatment plants to remove the fine suspended solid particles from the raw water. Backwashing of exhausted filter beds inevitably generates large volume of filtration sludge in water treatment plants. In this study, filtration sludge is collected, dried and crushed to powder, then passed through 90 µm sieve to get powdered filtration sludge (PFS) which is then characterized and utilized without energy intensive process of calcination.

Atherosclerosis, a major cause of cardiovascular diseases, is characterized by the buildup of lipids and chronic inflammation in the arteries, leading to plaque formation and potential rupture. Despite recent advances in single-cell transcriptomics (scRNA-seq), the underlying immune mechanisms and transformations in structural cells driving plaque progression remain incompletely defined. Existing datasets often lack comprehensive coverage and consistent annotations, limiting the utility of downstream analyses.

ConspectusWhat does the word antioxidant mean? Antioxidants are supposed to be nontoxic, versatile molecules capable of counteracting the damaging effects of oxidative stress (OS). Thus, when evaluating a candidate molecule as an antioxidant, several aspects should be considered. Antioxidants are more than free radical scavengers.
