Article Abstract

We designed heteroleptic ruthenium complexes (RD12-RD15) containing fluoro-substituted benzimidazole ligands for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These dyes were synthesized according to a typical one-pot procedure with the corresponding ancillary ligands produced in two simple steps; they were prepared into DSSC devices according to the same conditions of fabrication. The eventual devices show a systematic trend of increasing VOC and decreasing JSC with fluorine atoms of increasing number substituted on the ligand. The charge-extraction results show that upward shifts of the TiO2 potential occurred when the fluoro-substituted dyes were sensitized on TiO2 with a systematic trend of shift N719 > RD15 (with 5 F) > RD12 (with 2 F) >RD5 (no F); the intensity-modulated photovoltage spectra indicate that those fluoro substituents retard charge recombination with the electron lifetimes (τR) in the order RD15 > RD12 > RD5 > N719, consistent with the variation of VOC for the systems.

A Heteroleptic/Trimetallic Os-Ru-Zn Sierpiński Triangle for Efficient Photodynamic Therapy of Hypoxic Tumors Mainly through Type I Mechanism.

Owing to its less oxygen-dependent mechanism, type I photodynamic therapy (PDT) has exhibited significant superiority over the more common type II PDT in the treatment of hypoxic tumors. Supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) have shown great potential in photodynamic cancer therapy; however, SCC-based photosensitizers which can achieve type I PDT have rarely been reported. Herein, we present the design and synthesis of a novel heteroleptic/trimetallic Os-Ru-Zn Sierpiński triangle ST-2 via coordination-driven self-assembly.

A series of structurally related bistridentate heteroleptic Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes, [Ru(ttpy)(8-HQL)] (-), were synthesized, where = -tolyl terpyridine and are monoanionic N^N^O-donor tridentate ligands (), derived from 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ), namely, = 2-(2'-benzothiazole)-8-hydroxyquinoline, 2-(2'-benzimidazole)-8-hydroxyquinoline, and = 2-(2'-benzoxazole)-8-hydroxyquinoline. The electronic structures of these rigid ligands were systematically tuned by varying the noncoordinating heteroatoms (S, O, NH) in the five-membered heterocyclic ring, impacting the electronic properties, redox potentials, excited-state lifetime/dynamics, and deactivation pathways and photophysical behavior of the corresponding Ru(II) complexes. Notably, [Ru(ttpy)(8HQL)] () exhibited an excited-state lifetime (τ > 1 ns in CHCN at RT) surpassing that of the homoleptic complex [Ru(ttpy)] (τ ∼ 0.

A novel series of heteroleptic ruthenium complexes employing a butyl-functionalized terpyridine (tpy) as a donor and tpy functionalized with up to three carboxylic acid groups as acceptors are prepared. Structural tailoring of these complexes helped not only to tune the photo-excited-state lifetimes but also aided in accumulating electron density through the anchoring groups. Wider separation between the triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) state and the metal-centered states is achieved while maintaining a reasonable barrier between the S ground and the MLCT states.

A Potent Bis-Heteroleptic Ruthenium(II) Complex-Based Chalcogen Bonding Receptor for Selective Sensing of Phosphates.

The incorporation of a selenoimidazolium-based chalcogen bond (ChB) donor into a bis-heteroleptic Ru(II) complex (Ru-Se) has been designed for the first time to explore its anion-sensing properties and understand its selectivity to specific classes of anions. Photophysical studies demonstrate the receptor's selectivity toward phosphates, while H NMR displays its ability to recognize both I and HPO among the different halides and oxoanions through ChB interaction in CHCN and dimethyl sulfoxide- solvents, respectively. Additionally, microscopic studies such as DLS and TEM reveal that the selective turn-on sensing of HPO and HPO compared to I is driven by supramolecular aggregation behavior.

Ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes (RPCs) that emit from triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) states find a wide variety of uses ranging from luminophores to potential anti-cancer or anti-bacterial therapeutics. Herein we describe a greener, microwave-assisted synthetic pathway for the preparation of homoleptic [Ru(N^N)] and bis-heteroleptic [Ru(N^N)(N'^N')] type complexes. This employs the bio-renewable solvent Cyrene™, dihydrolevoglucosenone, as a green alternative to ,'-dimethylformamide (DMF) in the synthesis of Ru(N^N)Cl intermediate complexes, obtaining comparable yields for N^N = 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline and methylated derivatives.
