Modeled ions, described by nonpolarizable force fields, can suffer from unphysical ion pairing and clustering in aqueous solutions well below their solubility limit. The electronic continuum correction takes electronic polarization effects of the solvent into account in an effective way by scaling the charges on the ions, resulting in a much better description of the ionic behavior. Here, we present parameters for the sodium ion consistent with this effective polarizability approach and in agreement with experimental data from neutron scattering, which could be used for simulations of complex aqueous systems where polarization effects are important.

Osteoarthritis (OA), the prevalent debilitating joint disorder, is accelerated by dysregulated intercellular crosstalk, yet the role of fibroblast-like synoviocyte (FLS)-derived extracellular vesicles and particles (EVPs) in disease progression remains to be elucidated. Here, integrative analysis of clinical specimens, animal models, and publicly available datasets revealed significant alterations in exosomal pathways within OA synovium. Proteomic profiling revealed distinct molecular signatures in EVPs derived from inflammatory and senescent FLSs, reflecting the pathophysiological status of their parent cells.

Patchy nanoparticles (NPs) enable directional interactions and dynamic structural transformations, yet controlling polymeric patch formation with high spatial precision remains a significant challenge. Here, a thermally driven approach is presented to forming polystyrene (PS) patches on low-curvature facets of anisotropic gold nanocubes (NCs) using a single polymer component. Heating in DMF above 90 °C triggers selective desorption of PS chains from high-curvature edges and vertices via Au─S bond dissociation, followed by migration and deposition into rounded patches on flat surfaces.

Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) is a therapeutic intervention for modulating immune responses using an autologous apoptotic cell-based product, known as a photopheresate. The process of generating photopheresates offers attractive possibilities for manipulating distinct leukocyte subsets to either augment or dampen immune responses, depending on the disease context. This review discusses current uses of ECP as a cell-based therapy and introduces possible strategies to enhance the potency of photopheresates.
