Conversion of dissolved P by ferric sulfate into a particulate form sparingly available to algae was studied in 15 ditches in Finland using stand-alone dispensers for ferric sulfate administration. Ferric sulfate typically converted 60-70 % of dissolved P into iron-associated form, a process which required 250-650 kg per kg dissolved P. Mean cost was 160 EUR per kg P converted (range 20-400 EUR kg(-1)). The costs were lowest at sites characterized by high dissolved P concentrations and small catchment area. At best, the treatment was efficient and cost-effective, but to limit the costs and the risks, ferric sulfate dispensers should only be installed in small critical source areas.

Ferric chloride (FeCl) in sulfuric acid cloud droplets has been proposed to explain the inhomogeneous near-ultraviolet (UV) absorption visible at the Venusian cloud tops. However, the absorption spectrum of FeCl in concentrated sulfuric acid does not appear to have been measured previously; here we report measurements under appropriate conditions of temperature and HSO/HO solution strengths. The choice of solvent has a significant effect on the measured spectrum.

Bitumen extraction from mined oil sands ore generates a large volume of fluid fines tailings (FFT) that must be incorporated into either aquatic or terrestrial reclamation landforms. Mine operators are developing various tailings technologies to accelerate FFT dewatering, including the addition of chemical coagulants and flocculants. However, the impacts of these coagulants and flocculants on biogeochemical processes in treated FFT are not fully understood.

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder. Alterations in brain lipids may elucidate ASD's neurophysiological mechanisms, but evidence remains limited. This study aims to assess whether the MRI-measured lipid content in limbic brain regions could serve as novel biomarkers for neurophysiological changes in school-aged children with ASD.

Fe(III)-catalyzed sulfite oxidation is a critical process that influences the sulfur transformation in atmospheric waters and contributes to acid precipitation. Despite being an old topic, it has not yet succeeded to establish a universally accepted reaction model since real-time data on dissolved oxygen (DO) consumption is not incorporated. Utilizing an advanced fibre optic oxygen meter, kinetics of Fe(III)-catalyzed sulfite oxidation were revisited.
