Nine new β-dihydroagarofurans (1-9) and four new sesquiterpene pyridine alkaloids (10-13) were isolated from the leaves of Maytenus spinosa. Their structures were determined mainly by 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopic studies. The absolute configuration of compound 6 was established using CD spectroscopy. Several derivatives (14-20) were prepared from the sesquiterpene 13. Most of the sesquiterpenoids were tested for anti-HIV activity, but only compound 1 was found to be active.

Background: Human Immunodeficiency Virus and malaria are significant public health challenges in sub-Saharan Africa, contributing substantially to morbidity and mortality in the region. The trajectory of HIV and malaria mono- and coinfections may be different with presentations of drug-drug and disease-disease interactions. Current medications of artemether-lumefantrine and dolutegravir (DTG) -based anti-retroviral therapy which are the preferred drugs are metabolised by CYP2B6, CYP3A4/5 and UGTs which are polymorphic and may contribute to drug disposition and clinical outcomes.

Cerebellar ataxia is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder characterized by impaired motor coordination and balance with limited treatment options. Abscisic acid (ABA), a phytohormone detected in mammalian brains, has shown neuroprotective properties. This study investigated the effects of ABA on motor, cognitive, and affective deficits in a mouse model of cerebellar ataxia in which male Swiss mice received a single intraperitoneal injection of 3-acetylpyridine (3-AP; 60 mg/kg), which leads to the loss of climbing fiber input to Purkinje neurons leading to cerebellar degeneration.

Melanoma remains a global health challenge. While targeted therapy with BRAF/MEK inhibitors largely improved the survival and quality of life for advanced melanoma patients, most of them progress due to acquired resistance. Dynamic heterogeneity and phenotypic plasticity of resistant melanoma prompted us to use parthenolide, an agent with an assorted bioactivity profile in combination with agents targeting enhanced pro-survival capacity of resistant melanoma cells.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second largest neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease (AD), and neuroinflammation is one of its important causes. So far, there is no clear evidence that drugs can improve the onset of PD, so it is crucial to find and develop effective drugs for PD treatment. Abscisic acid (ABA) is a phytohormone with structural and medicinal functions similar to the PPAR-γ agonist thiazolidinedione drugs (TZDs).
