Bacterial meningitis is a disease of pronounced clinical significance, especially in the developing world. Immediate treatment with antibiotics is essential, and no single test can provide a conclusive diagnosis. It is well established that elevated total protein in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is associated with bacterial meningitis. Brillouin spectroscopy is a widely used optical technique for noninvasive determination of the elastic moduli of materials. We found that elevated protein levels in CSF alter the fluid elasticity sufficiently to be measurable by Brillouin spectroscopy, with model healthy and diseased fluids distinguishable to marked significance (P = 0.014), which increases with sample concentration by dialysis. Typical raw output of a 2-stage VIPA Brillouin spectrometer: inelastically scattered Brillouin peaks (arrows) and elastically scattered incident radiation (center cross).

The band structure of ultrathin Pd(111) thin films grown on the CrO(0001) surface was studied by angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) combined with first-principles calculations. The CrO(0001) interface and the expanded Pd lattice constant appears to significantly affect the occupied band structure of an ultrathin palladium film. A characteristic band splitting is seen in the experimental occupied electronic structure, forming a hexagonal pattern approximately half-way from the Γ" point to the surface Brillouin zone boundary.

Brillouin microscopy allows mechanical investigations of biological materials at the subcellular level and can be integrated with Raman spectroscopy for simultaneous chemical mapping, thus enabling a more comprehensive interpretation of biomechanics. The present study investigates different in vitro glioblastoma models using a combination of Brillouin and Raman microspectroscopy. Spheroids of the U87-MG cell line and two patient-derived cell lines as well as patient-derived organoids were used.

We report carbon and fluorine KV double core hole (DCH) spectra of CHF, recorded by single-photon hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A striking inversion in intensity between the and K7(3) resonances reflects a polarity switch in bonding character depending on the K-shell vacancy site. Within the Brillouin Inverse Theorem (BIT) framework, the transition strengths are shown to depend on the bielectronic integral (V = σ*, 3).

We propose and demonstrate what we believe to be a novel high-resolution spectroscopic technique based on the combination of a spectrally interleaved Brillouin optical frequency comb (OFC) and an optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). The Brillouin OFC is generated by the interaction of a dual-wavelength intracavity Brillouin laser, which is produced by using a step-tuned tunable laser source and an electro-optic I/Q modulator, via a cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) process in a nonlinear optical fiber loop. The proposed spectroscopic technique is experimentally demonstrated with a fiber Bragg grating transmission.
