Article Abstract

An imaging plate (IP) system was used as an effective detector for direct measurement of radioactive surface contamination. The IP system displayed images designating the locations and extent of fixed surface contamination of uranyl acetate. The amount of radioactive waste produced during decontamination was reduced because the contaminated spots could be isolated; furthermore, creation of radioactive dust during removal of contamination was prevented because the contaminated spots could be removed without being pulverized. The images were used in efficiently and safely isolating the location of fixed surface contamination. The IP system surface contamination detection limit for uranyl acetate was 2.5 × 10 Bq cm, a value much lower than the surface contamination limit and the clearance level.

Physicochemical, microbiological, and microstructural changes in germinated wheat grain.

PLoS One

Department of Science, LLP "Research and Production Enterprise "Innovator", Astana, Kazakhstan.

This study investigates the physicochemical, microbiological, and microstructural changes in soft wheat grain during germination under varying moisture conditions: moderately dry, moist, and wet. Pre-harvest sprouting can severely compromise grain quality and usability; however, understanding germination-induced changes offers insights into potential utilization strategies. Physical parameters-including thousand-kernel weight, test weight, and falling number-showed strong correlation with germination time, decreasing by 8.

Application of lignin extracted from fibers and aminated lignin in anionic dyes contaminated water remediation.

Int J Phytoremediation

Department of Fashion and Textile Design, College of Arts and Design, Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

In this paper, lignin was chemically extracted from fibers and modified with branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI) and the resulting samples were applied for the adsorption of two anionic dyes; Acid red 183 (AR183) and Acid blue 25 (AB25) from aqueous suspension. Analytical characterization methods including SEM, FT-IR, TGA/DTG, and XRD were used to analyze the studied samples. The images of the extracted lignin displayed a rough feature.

Background: Hospital surfaces are critical reservoirs of multidrug-resistant pathogens, including third-generation cephalosporin-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (3GC-R-GNB), significantly contributing to healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). This challenge is pronounced in low- and middle-income countries, where resource constraints limit effective infection prevention and control (IPC) measures. This study screened hospital surfaces for 3GC-R-GNB in selected District Hospitals (DHs) in Mwanza, Tanzania.

The efficient and sustainable remediation of contaminated water calls for catalytic systems that must clean broadly, endure widely, and last repeatedly. In this regard, we report the development of sulfonate-functionalized core-shell hydrogel beads embedded with synthesized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that exhibit intrinsic oxidase-like activity without requiring external light or chemical oxidants. The sulfonate ligands modulate the surface electronic environment of the AuNPs, facilitating singlet oxygen generation via a nonplasmonic, radiationless mechanism.

Antiepileptic drugs and lipid-lowering agents in surface water in Colombia: occurrence, ecological threat, and removal strategies.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

Grupo de Saneamiento Ambiental, Facultad de Ingeniería, Escuela de Ingeniería de Recursos Naturales y del Ambiente, Universidad del Valle, Calle13 #100-00, 76001, Santiago de Cali, Colombia.

The presence of pharmaceuticals in water poses emerging environmental risks to aquatic ecosystems and potentially human health. This study investigates the occurrence and ecological threat of antiepileptic drugs and lipid-lowering agents in surface water, specifically in the Cauca River, one of the most important rivers in Colombia. Quantification was conducted using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.
