Use of the 1,3,5-tri(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane ligand, LH, in manganese chemistry affords access to two structurally related {Mn} clusters: a "closed" {Mn Mn } puckered square wheel of formula [MnL(LH)O(OH)(MeO)Br(imH)(HO)](Br) (; imH = imidazole) and an "open" {Mn } rod of formula [Mn LO(aibH)(aib)(MeO)(MeOH)](NO) (, aibH = 2-amino-isobutyric acid). In each case the triaza ligands, L/LH, direct the formation of {Mn} triangles with their N atoms preferentially bonding to the Jahn-Teller axes of the Mn ions. Subsequent self-assembly is dependent on the anion of the Mn salt and the identity of the organic coligand employed-the terminally bonded imidazole and the chelating/bridging amino acid.

We report on the isolation of a new family of μ-carboxylato-bridged metallocrown (MC) compounds by self-assembly of the recently isolated hexadentate tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine ligand tpada incorporating two carboxylate units with metal cations. Twelve-membered MCs of manganese of the type 12-MC-3, namely, [{Mn(tpada)}(M)(HO)] () (M = Mn ( = 0), Ca ( = 1), or Sr ( = 2)), were structurally characterized. The metallamacrocycles connectivity consisting in three -[Mn-O-C-O]- repeating units is provided by one carboxylate unit of the three tpada ligands, while the second carboxylate coordinated a fourth cation in the central cavity of the MC, Mn or an alkaline earth metal, Ca or Sr.

The chelating ligand 1,3-bis(tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamino)propane (HL) has been used to synthesize a family of octanuclear heterometallic complexes with the formula (NMe)[MnLn(HL)(HL)(NO)] (Ln = La (), Ce (), Pr (), Nd ()). Encapsulation by the ligand causes the Mn(III) centers to lie in an unusually distorted (∼) environment, which is shown by density functional theory and complete active space self-consistent field calculations to impact on the magnetic anisotropy of the Mn(III) ion. The theoretical study also supports the experimental observation of a ferromagnetic superexchange interaction between the Mn(III) ions in , despite the ions being separated by the diamagnetic La(III) ion.

Combinations of radiotherapy (RT) and chemotherapy have shown efficacy toward brain tumors. However, therapy-induced oxidative stress can damage normal brain tissue, resulting in both progressive neurocognitive loss and diminished quality of life. We have recently shown that MnTnBuOE-2-PyP(5+) (Mn(III)meso-tetrakis(N-n-butoxyethylpyridinium -2-yl)porphyrin) rescued RT-induced white matter damage in cranially-irradiated mice.

The synthesis, gas sorption studies, magnetic properties, and theoretical studies of new molecular wheels of core type {Mn(III) 8 Ln(III) 8 } (Ln=Dy, Ho, Er, Y and Yb), using the ligand mdeaH2 , in the presence of ortho-toluic or benzoic acid are reported. From the seven wheels studied the {Mn8 Dy8 } and {Mn8 Y8 } analogues exhibit SMM behavior as determined from ac susceptibility experiments in a zero static magnetic field. From DFT calculations a S=16 ground state was determined for the {Mn8 Y8 } complex due to weak ferromagnetic Mn(III) -Mn(III) interactions.
