Captures of insects in pitfall traps are affected by features of trap design that may confound the interpretation of data. One such feature is a lid suspended over the opening of the trap to exclude debris and rainwater. In this study, we tested whether use of these lids affected captures of carabid beetles by altering the light conditions at the opening to the trap. In one experiment, we examined the effects of lid transparency (opaque, semitransparent, or transparent) on catch rates. In a second experiment, we manipulated the heights (high, medium, or low) of vegetation adjacent to the traps to test for lid transparency and vegetation height interactions. We found that significantly more carabids were captured with use of transparent lids compared with other lid transparencies. Fewest Agonum cupreum Dejean, 1831, were captured with use of opaque lids. No other effects were detected. Given these results, we advocate the use of transparent lids, which provide the benefits of traditional opaque lids while minimizing the effects of lid use on light conditions at the opening to the trap.

This paper investigates noise control in vibro-acoustic systems with noise barriers incorporating structural openings, focusing on active noise control and Active Structural Acoustic Control (ASAC). It also introduces a novel approach, Dual-Actuator-Type Active Noise Control (DATANC), which combines loudspeakers and inertial actuators into the same barrier to address the challenges of noise reduction.

Fluid-cell Raman Spectroscopy (FCRS) enables the real-time and space-resolved (operando) study of reaction mechanisms, kinetics, and their mutual interactions with transport processes during silicate glass corrosion at the micrometer scale and at elevated temperatures. This manuscript provides a detailed protocol for setting up an FCRS experiment, exemplified by a corrosion experiment with a ternary Na borosilicate glass and a 0.5 M NaHCO3 solution at a temperature of 86 ± 1 °C.

This study aimed to investigate the most important functional properties of multilayer and alternative packaging with improved sustainability specifically used for modified atmosphere (MAP) and chilled food products. A multilayer material with a thickness reduction, mono-PET, paper/PE-EVOH-PE, and a biopolymer for trays, together with a SiO-coated PET, and a cellulose/PLA-based for lids were analyzed for their optical, tensile, and gas-vapor barrier properties, which were compared to those of conventional trays/lids (PET-EVOH-PE multilayer structures). All the alternative solutions showed good UV-light screening ability, together with high transparency in the visible range, and tensile properties greater than those displayed by conventional configurations.

Tool use is taxonomically associated with high behavioural flexibility and innovativeness, and its prevalence is greater in primates and some bird species. This association, however, is not known to be causally determinant of tool-related competence since flexibility and innovativeness are often observed in the absence of tool use and vice versa. For this reason, it is interesting to explore whether animals that can be loosely categorized as outstanding, or 'intelligent' physical problem solvers, are also remarkable using tools innovatively, rather than tool use presenting special constraints.
