1. Myocardial infarction (MI) is characterized by the withdrawal of vagal activity and increased sympathetic activity. We have shown previously that pyridostigmine (PYR), an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, was able to improve vagal activity and ameliorate cardiac dysfunction following MI. However, the effect of PYR on endothelial dysfunction in peripheral arteries after MI remains unclear. 2. In the present study, MI was induced by coronary artery ligation in adult Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats were treated intragastrically with saline or PYR (approximately 31 mg/kg per day) for 2 weeks, at which time haemodynamic and parasympathetic parameters and the vascular reactivity of isolated mesenteric arteries were measured and the ultrastructure of the endothelium evaluated. 3. Compared with the MI group, PYR not only improved cardiac function, vagal nerve activity and endothelial impairment, but also reduced intravascular superoxide anion and malondialdehyde. In addition, in the PYR-treated MI group, nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability was increased and attenuated endothelium-dependent relaxations were improved, whereas restored vasodilator responses were inhibited by N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester. 4. Based on our results, PYR is able to attenuate the impairment of peripheral endothelial function and maintain endothelial ultrastructural integrity in MI rats by inhibiting reactive oxygen species production, enhancing NO bioavailability and improving vagal activity.

Diagnoses of prediabetes and metabolic syndromes, such as metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), are increasing at an alarming rate worldwide, often simultaneously. A significant consequence of these is high risk of cardiovascular disease, highlighting the need for cardiac-specific therapeutics for intervention during the prediabetic stage. Recent studies have demonstrated that chemogenetic activation of the cardiac parasympathetic system through hypothalamic oxytocin (OXT) neurons provides cardioprotective effects in heart disease models by targeting excitatory neurotransmission to brainstem cardiac vagal neurons.

This case study reports the first documented use of stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG)-guided radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFTC) to treat refractory status epilepticus (RSE). A 33-year-old woman with drug-resistant epilepsy and recurrent RSE underwent SEEG to define her epileptogenic zone. A new RSE started shortly before and continued during the SEEG exploration, being unresponsive to multiple antiseizure medications, vagal nerve stimulation, and corticosteroid therapy.

Background: Damage to peri-esophageal tissue may occur following pulmonary vein isolation (PVI). Active esophageal cooling has been shown to reduce the incidence of mucosal esophageal injury, probably by dissipation of heat and inhibition of inflammation. Whether it also protects the peri-esophageal vagal nerve plexus and reduces gastric hypomotility and food retention is uncertain.

Affective touch, mediated by the activation of C-tactile afferents, has the potential to modulate affective states and physiological responses in situations of emotional distress, across the lifespan. The present study aims to disentangle psychophysiological mechanisms supporting autonomic and emotional self-regulation, focusing on the possible buffering role of affective touch. Childless adult participants (N = 92) were presented with videos of an infant babbling (positive scene) and an infant crying (emotionally negative scene), followed by a tactile stimulation either affective (brushing) or non-affective (tapping).
