Seasonal adjustment of alpha-chloralose captures of sandhill cranes was associated with a modest increase in capture efficacy (+13%), decreased morbidity from exertional myopathy (-1.4%), and overall mortality (-1.7%) rates despite little change in sedation scores. Postcapture fluid administration also decreased confinement times by several hours over most sedation scores.

Cases of exertional myopathy (EM) have been reported following the capture of greater sandhill cranes () for research and management purposes. Antioxidants, such as vitamin E and selenium, have been suggested to reduce the risk of capture myopathy in Galliformes, but their prophylactic use against EM development in cranes has not been reported. The objective of this study was to determine if an IM injection of vitamin E and selenium during handling would influence postcapture activity and movement of cannon net-captured greater sandhill cranes.

Objective: To establish baseline ophthalmic parameters for an endangered, semi-wild population of healthy whooping cranes (Grus americana) (WHCR) and Mississippi sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis pulla) (SACR).
Animals Studied: Eighteen WHCR and 16 SACR.
Procedures: Ophthalmic examination was performed by a single observer, followed by conjunctival swab collection for aerobic bacterial culture and measurement of tear production (phenol red thread test, PRTT) and corneal diameter (CD) as tolerated.

We estimated the annual harvest of waterfowl and Sandhill Crane Grus canadensis and their eggs by Alaska's rural residents and described seasonal and geographic patterns. Subsistence in Alaska refers to patterns of resource use typical of rural, remote regions where Indigenous people are a high proportion of the population. Rural communities in Alaska rely on the legally-allowed spring-summer harvest of migratory birds for food and socio-cultural wellbeing, in addition to harvests in the fall-winter general hunting season.
