Abnormalities in melatonin physiology may be involved or closely linked to the pathophysiology and behavioral expression of autistic disorder, given its role in neurodevelopment and reports of sleep-wake rhythm disturbances, decreased nocturnal melatonin production, and beneficial therapeutic effects of melatonin in individuals with autism. In addition, melatonin, as a pineal gland hormone produced from serotonin, is of special interest in autistic disorder given reported alterations in central and peripheral serotonin neurobiology. More specifically, the role of melatonin in the ontogenetic establishment of circadian rhythms and the synchronization of peripheral oscillators opens interesting perspectives to ascertain better the mechanisms underlying the significant relationship found between lower nocturnal melatonin excretion and increased severity of autistic social communication impairments, especially for verbal communication and social imitative play. In this article, first we review the studies on melatonin levels and the treatment studies of melatonin in autistic disorder. Then, we discuss the relationships between melatonin and autistic behavioral impairments with regard to social communication (verbal and non-verbal communication, social interaction), and repetitive behaviors or interests with difficulties adapting to change. In conclusion, we emphasize that randomized clinical trials in autism spectrum disorders are warranted to establish potential therapeutic efficacy of melatonin for social communication impairments and stereotyped behaviors or interests.

We examined the concurrent change in developmental language phase (DLP) and linguistic status of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)/autism, identified as Nonverbal/Minimally-Verbal (NV/MV), utilizing Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC) systems. We compared the linguistic output of NV/MV autistic children concurrently, with and without use of AAC systems. Additionally, we compared the linguistic level, characteristics, and early developmental milestones for AAC users and non-users.

Introduction: Identifying anxiety disorders in autistic youth can be challenging due to the unique presentation of anxiety symptoms in autistic youth and the difficulties youth may have reporting on their own anxiety symptoms. These challenges underscore the need for objective and reliable measures. Understanding whether autonomic activity is associated with the presence of anxiety may lead to its use as an objective anxiety assessment tool in individuals who may otherwise struggle to communicate their feelings of anxiety.

The remarkable ability of a single genome sequence to encode a diverse collection of distinct cell types, including the thousands of cell types found in the mammalian brain, is a key characteristic of multicellular life. While it has been observed that some cell types are far more evolutionarily conserved than others, the factors driving these differences in the evolutionary rate remain unknown. Here, we hypothesized that highly abundant neuronal cell types may be under greater selective constraint than rarer neuronal types, leading to variation in their rates of evolution.

The current study aims to report on the concordance between the PHQ-9, GAD-7, Adult Self Report (ASR), Anxiety and Related Disorders Interview Schedule for DSM-5 (ADIS-5), and best estimate clinical diagnosis (BECD) among autistic adults. The current analyses leverage baseline data from a feasibility treatment study of autistic adults receiving group behavioral activation therapy to address anxiety and depressive symptoms. Interclass correlation coefficients, area under the curve, sensitivity, and specificity were computed to compare the tools to one another at various clinical cut-off levels.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social interaction, communication, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors. Its higher prevalence in males underscores the importance of understanding potential sex-specific differences.
