Copper-based quaternary chalcogenide semiconductor Cu2ZnGeS4 and Cu2ZnGeSe4 nanocrystals have been synthesized successfully via a simple and convenient one-pot phosphine-free solution approach. Oleylamine was used as both the solvent and reductant for Se or S and benefited the formation of homogeneous quaternary nanocrystals. Scanning transmission electron microscopy-EDS elemental mapping confirms the uniform spatial distribution of four elements in nanocrystals. UV-Vis absorption spectra of Cu2ZnGeS4 and Cu2ZnGeSe4 nanocrystals show strong photon absorption in the entire visible range. The photoresponsive behavior indicates the potential application of Cu2ZnGeSe4 nanocrystals in solar energy conversion systems.

Single crystals of CuZnGeSe and CuZnGeS solid solutions were developed and successfully obtained using the chemical vapor transfer method, with iodine acting as a transporter. The structure, compositional dependences of lattice parameters, pycnometric and X-ray densities and microhardness were determined. The chemical composition determined by the X-ray microanalysis satisfactorily corresponds to the nominal one with a tolerance of ±5 %.

Following the chronological stages of calculations imposed by the WIEN2K code, we have performed a series of density functional theory calculations, from which we were able to study the effect of strain on the kesterite structures for two quaternary semiconductor compounds Cu2ZnGeS4 and Cu2ZnGeSe4. Remarkable changes were found in the electronic and optical properties of these two materials during the application of biaxial strain. Indeed, the band gap energy of both materials decreases from the equilibrium state, and the applied strain is more pronounced.

Cu2ZnGeS4 (CZGS) and Cu2ZnGeSe4 (CZGSe) single crystalline nanowire arrays have been prepared via a convenient one-step nanoconfined solvothermal approach. The porous anodic aluminum oxide was used as a morphology directing template by offering nanospace in the AAO pores for confined solvothermal reaction. The structure, morphology, composition, and optical absorption properties of the as-prepared samples were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, and a UV-vis spectrophotometer.
