Article Abstract

A strain with urethanase activity was isolated from mouse gastrointestine. By combination of morphological characterization of the colony, hyphae, and spore and the sequence analysis of its rDNA ITS, the strain was determined as Penicillium variabile and named as P. variabile JN-A525. The enzymatic properties of urethanase from P. variabile JN-A525 were further studied. The optimum temperature and pH value of urethanase are of 50 °C and 6.0, respectively. The enzyme maintains stability when the temperature is below 50 °C and the pH is in the range of 7.0-10.0. The enzyme also exhibits ethanol tolerance. It can remove ethyl carbamate from Chinese rice wine without the change of flavor substances in the wine.

Three new azaphilone derivatives, namely talavaritones A-C (1-3), together with seven known compounds (4-10) were isolated from the soft coral-derived fungus Talaromyces variabilis. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by comprehensive spectral analyses, DP4+ probability analyses, together with experimental and calculated ECD spectra. Structurally, compound 1 is the first reported example of 1, 2-seco-azaphilone.

, a filamentous fungus widely distributed across terrestrial and marine environments, can produce a diverse array of natural products, including alkaloids, polyketones, and polyketide-terpenoids. Among these, chrodrimanins represented a typical class of natural products. In this study, we isolated three previously undescribed pentaketide-sesquiterpenes, 8,9--chrodrimanins (-), along with eight known compounds (-).

Maize moldy and spoilage due to microbial growth is a significant challenge in grain storage. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a zinc oxide nanocomposite, ZnO@mSiO, prepared in our previous research, in inhibiting mold growth and preserving maize cell quality. The results demonstrated that ZnO@mSiO could effectively inhibit the growth of dominant microorganism, Aspergillus flavus, Talaromyces variabilis, Penicillium citrinum and Fusarium graminearum, in maize storage.

Three new compounds, including one steroid named penivariod A (1) and two polyketides penivarides A and B (2 and 3), as well as six known derivatives (4-9) were isolated from Penicillium variabile EN-394, a fungus afforded from the marine red alga Rhodomela confervoides. Their structures were elucidated by analysis of the HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR. The absolute stereochemistry was determined by X-ray crystallographic data, gauge-independent atomic orbital (GIAO) NMR shift calculation followed by DP4+ analysis combined with calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD).

Penicillium is one of the most important postharvest pathogens of citrus fruits worldwide. It induces blue or green mold disease, a decay that can lead to significant economic losses during storage. Based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences, seven Penicillium species and one closely related Talaromyces variabilis were identified from 30 rotten samples of citrus fruits marketed in Qena.
