A substantial number of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) report compulsions that are preceded not by obsessions but by subjective experiences known as sensory phenomena. This study aimed to investigate the frequency, severity, and age at onset of sensory phenomena in OCD, as well as to compare OCD patients with and without sensory phenomena in terms of clinical characteristics. We assessed 1,001 consecutive OCD patients, using instruments designed to evaluate the frequency/severity of OC symptoms, tics, anxiety, depression, level of insight and presence/severity of sensory phenomena. All together, 651 (65.0%) subjects reported at least one type of sensory phenomena preceding the repetitive behaviors. Considering the sensory phenomena subtypes, 371 (57.0%) patients had musculoskeletal sensations, 519 (79.7%) had externally triggered "just-right" perceptions, 176 (27.0%) presented internally triggered "just right," 144 (22.1%) had an "energy release," and 240 (36.9%) patients had an "urge only" phenomenon. Sensory phenomena were described as being as more severe than were obsessions by 102(15.7%) patients. Logistic regression analysis showed that the following characteristics were associated with the presence of sensory phenomena: higher frequency and greater severity of the symmetry/ordering/arranging and contamination/washing symptom dimensions; comorbid Tourette syndrome, and a family history of tic disorders. These data suggest that sensory phenomena constitute a poorly understood psychopathological aspect of OCD that merits further investigation.

At chemical synapses, the interplay between the stimulation pattern, the dynamics of presynaptic calcium concentration and the use and replenishment of the vesicle pool causes plasticity phenomena such as synaptic facilitation and depression. These phenomena may coexist, with their relative contribution depending mostly on the initial release probability. Synaptic facilitation is caused by an increased probability of release as a result of presynaptic calcium accumulation, whereas synaptic depression is attributed to depletion of the releasable vesicle pool.

In this article, a biophysically realistic model of a soft octopus arm with internal musculature is presented. The modeling is motivated by experimental observations of sensorimotor control where an arm localizes and reaches a target. Major contributions of this article are: (i) development of models to capture the mechanical properties of arm musculature, the electrical properties of the arm peripheral nervous system (PNS), and the coupling of PNS with muscular contractions; (ii) modeling the arm sensory system, including chemosensing and proprioception; and (iii) algorithms for sensorimotor control, which include a novel feedback neural motor control law for mimicking target-oriented arm reaching motions, and a novel consensus algorithm for solving sensing problems such as locating a food source from local chemical sensory information (exogenous) and arm deformation information (endogenous).

This study presents a biopreservation method using sourdough co-fermented with Fructilactobacillus sanfranciscensis and Propionibacterium freudenreichii, optimizing conditions to 220 hydration and 24 h fermentation. The composite sourdough bread quality was evaluated through physicochemical, storage, sensory, and microbial tests, with mechanisms analyzed based on microstructure, rheology, and dough structure. Results showed that: first, the composite sourdough enhanced bread physicochemical properties, increasing volume, height-to-diameter ratio, elasticity, and resilience, while reducing baking loss, hardness, chewiness, and adhesiveness.

We present a speech motor control model that integrates optimal feedback control (OFC) for movement planning and execution with a biomechanical model of the vocal tract. The OFC model was designed to optimize a cost function that combines motor effort and the achievement of multisensory goal zones. We show that the model can account for various aspects of speech production: kinematic properties, coarticulation, and sensorimotor integration.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) affects millions of people globally and is characterized by cycles of intoxication, withdrawal, and relapse. Convergent clinical and preclinical evidence strongly support the conclusion that AUD precipitates chronic pain marked by mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity, yet currently available FDA-approved therapeutics do not effectively manage AUD-associated pain. This review synthesizes clinical and preclinical evidence on AUD-associated pain, highlighting known phenomena of allodynia and hyperalgesia as well as small and/or large fiber neuropathy in patient subpopulations along with preclinical acute and chronic alcohol exposure paradigm-specific nociceptive phenotypes in rodents.
