Here we report on the design, synthesis and application of small, highly bright, star-shaped SERS encoded single nanoparticles with the ability of providing an optical signal upon excitation with near infrared light. These particles are colloidally stable, fully biocompatible and can be internalized into living cells for intracellular imaging.

GPCRs are known for their versatile signaling roles at the plasma membrane; however, recent studies have revealed that these receptors also function within various intracellular compartments, such as endosomes, the Golgi apparatus, and the endoplasmic reticulum. This spatially distinct signaling, termed location bias, allows GPCRs to initiate unique signaling cascades and influence cellular processes-including cAMP production, calcium mobilization, and protein phosphorylation-in a compartment-specific manner. By mapping the impact of GPCR signaling from these subcellular locations, this chapter emphasizes the mechanisms underlying signaling from intracellular receptor pools in diversifying receptor functionality.

The ribosome-associated endoribonuclease 1 (Rae1) cleaves messenger RNAs (mRNAs) in a translation-dependent manner. Here, we identify a new Rae1 target, the fliY mRNA, which is cleaved by Rae1 in the absence of the elongation factor P. Benthic Foraminifera exhibit diverse adaptations to low oxygen (O) environments, including denitrification, a rare trait among eukaryotes. Denitrifying species store intracellular nitrate (NO ), possibly within vacuoles, and contribute significantly to the global marine nitrogen (N) cycle. Additionally, widespread phosphate (PO ) accumulation suggests a role in supporting metabolism under O-depleted conditions.
