The aim of this study was to apply a proteomic approach for the characterisation of local chicken breeds. The experiment involved a total of 29 males of three local Italian chicken breeds: Pépoi, Padovana and Ermellinata di Rovigo. Sarcoplasmic protein fractions of breast muscle were analysed by 2-DE. Image analysis followed by statistical analysis enabled to differentiate groups of individuals based on the similarities of protein expression. Individuals were distinguished into clusters and groups, corresponding to the breed of origin. Distances among individuals, calculated using data on spot volumes, were used to draw a neighbour-joining tree, showing clear individual and breed grouping. The most relevant spots regarding breed differentiation were detected; 11 were identified by MS revealing preliminary evidences on the mechanisms of the breed differentiation process. The results evidenced the ability of proteomic analyses for the characterisation of chicken breeds.

This study investigates the immunogenetic diversity of MHC class II B-Lβ genes (B-LβI and B-LβII) in this population, aiming to assess their potential value in selective breeding programs focused on disease resistance.

Chicken Leucocytozoonosis is a protozoan disease that affects the blood and tissues of chickens. High summer temperatures create optimal conditions for reproducing biting midges, the primary vectors for transmitting Leucocytozoon to chickens. In Taiwan, a subtropical region, the disease remains prevalent throughout the year, except in winter, leading to significant economic losses due to increased mortality and reduced egg production.

The latest studies suggest a beneficial influence of husbandry factors, including increased space allowance, access to perches, and roughage, on the welfare of chickens; however, their effects on meat quality are divergent. Two experiments (EXP1 and EXP2) were performed to determine the husbandry factors affecting the meat quality of 42-day-old Ross 308 chickens (n = 180). The examined factors in EXP1 were stocking density (35 kg/m2 vs 41 kg/m2) and enrichment (access to perches), whereas in EXP2, enrichment (perches) and access to roughage (dried lucerne) were examined.

Late-stage mortality is a significant challenge for the poultry industry, leading to substantial economic losses, concerns about animal welfare, and operational sustainability. Heart-related conditions, including ascites syndrome, pulmonary hypertension syndrome, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and sudden death syndrome, contribute significantly to this issue. The increasing prevalence of these conditions is potentially linked to intense selection pressure aimed at maximizing meat yield, particularly breast meat.
