Considerable attention has recently been focused on the use of hyperaccumulator plants for the phytoremediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals. The moss, Scopelophila cataractae (Mitt.) Broth., is a typical hyperaccumulator that is usually observed only in copper-rich environments and which accumulates high concentrations of copper in its tissues. However, many of the physiological processes and mechanisms for metal hyperaccumulation in S. cataractae remain unknown. To address this issue, we examined the mechanisms regulating gemma formation, which is considered the main strategy by which S. cataractae relocates to new copper-rich areas. From this study we found that treatment of S. cataractae with high concentrations of copper suppressed gemma formation but promoted protonemal growth. The suppressive effect was not observed by treatment with heavy metals other than copper. These results suggest the importance of copper-sensitive asexual reproduction in the unique life strategy of the copper moss, S. cataractae.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising alternative to anaerobic digestion for municipal sludge valorization due to biocrude oil and nutrient-dense hydrochar production, smaller footprint, enhanced micropollutant degradation, and minimized residual biosolids. However, integrating HTL into wastewater treatment plants necessitates on-site treatment of HTL aqueous, which is 80 % of byproducts by volume. HTL aqueous exhibits inhibition on downstream biological treatment due to high chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phenolics, ketones and nitrogen heterocyclics.

Sepsis is a clinical syndrome characterized by a dysregulated host response to infection, frequently resulting in septic shock and multi-organ failure. Emerging evidence highlights the critical role of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in the pathophysiology of sepsis. NETs are extracellular structures composed of chromatin DNA, histones, and granular proteins released by neutrophils through a specialized form of cell death known as NETosis.

Among genetic retinal disorders, retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is characterized by degeneration of rod photoreceptors caused by a large number of diverse mutations, most of which act through different pathways to which epigenetic targets also contribute. The eraser enzymes lysine demethylase 1 (LSD1) and histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1) play major roles in the development of rod photoreceptors, and their inhibitors were shown to block inherited rod degeneration, preserving vision and contributing to a general anti-inflammatory profile at the retinal level. In this work, we proposed the development of polypharmacological agents targeting class I HDAC/LSD1 enzymes with the aim of treating the mice model of RP.

Functionalization of hernia repair mesh materials with drug-releasing coatings enables local and controlled therapeutic delivery, offering promising, cutting-edge devices to prevent postoperative infection. In this study, we evaluated in vitro and in vivo two novel antibacterial coatings applied to polypropylene meshes used in surgical hernia repair. Carboxymethylcellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (CMC/PVA) microfibers combined with chlorhexidine (CHX) or rifampicin (RIF) were electrospun on both sides of the mesh, establishing 4 groups: uncoated control; CMC/PVA; CMC/PVA + CHX; CMC/PVA + RIF.
