Meiotic crossovers (COs) are tightly regulated to ensure that COs on the same chromosome are distributed far apart (crossover interference, COI) and that at least one CO is formed per homolog pair (CO homeostasis). CO formation is controlled in part during meiotic double-strand break (DSB) creation in Caenorhabditis elegans, but a second level of control must also exist because meiotic DSBs outnumber COs. We show that the antirecombinase RTEL-1 is required to prevent excess meiotic COs, probably by promoting meiotic synthesis-dependent strand annealing. Two distinct classes of meiotic COs are increased in rtel-1 mutants, and COI and homeostasis are compromised. We propose that RTEL-1 implements the second level of CO control by promoting noncrossovers.

Rad51 and meiosis-specific Dmc1 catalyze homologous recombination (HR) between maternal and paternal chromosomes during meiosis in many sexual eukaryotes, generating three interhomolog (IH) recombination products: non-crossovers (NCOs), class I interference-sensitive crossovers (COs), and class II non-interfering COs. CO interference suppresses relatively close CO formation. Some COs form chiasmata, which physically connect homologous chromosomes and ensure proper chromosome segregation during meiosis I.

Falls pose a significant health risk for older adults, with most incidents occurring during dual-task situations-when walking is combined with a secondary cognitive task. Reducing cognitive-motor interference and attentional demands during walking is therefore a key goal in effective fall-prevention and rehabilitation programs. High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) is an emerging neuromodulation technique that may support this goal by enhancing neural efficiency.

Introduction: Music reduces pain and anxiety in various contexts, but the possible effect on pain anticipatory mechanisms remains unclear.
Objectives: This study examines the effects of a standardized musical intervention (Music Care) on pain perception and on pain modulation induced by expectations of low or high pain.
Methods: Healthy participants were tested in an experimental study using a crossover design involving the musical intervention counterbalanced with an active auditory control condition (audiobook) and a silent control condition.

Meiotic recombination ensures the fidelity of chromosome segregation in most organisms with sexual reproduction. The distribution of crossovers along chromosomes is governed in part by interference, which prevents multiple crossovers from occurring in close proximity, though not all crossovers are subject to interference. Neither the factors that control strength of interference, nor the extent to which they vary within and between species, are well understood.
