Background: The extent and the number of routine tests performed for blood donor screening to avoid infections transmitted through blood transfusion have been gradually increasing worldwide and is determined nationally. Following the publication of the new "blood and blood components regulation", the blood banking and transfusion system is through a reorganization stage in Turkey. The national guideline including the donor screening algorithms is to be published which requires national data to be created. The aim of this study is to investigate HBV DNA in pooled plasma samples of blood donors in Turkey, which is a middle endemicity country for HBV infection.
Study Design And Methods: Presence of HBV DNA was investigated using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method in 187 pooled plasma samples prepared from 4484 blood donors, whose screening tests were found to be negative. The seropositivity for HBsAg of the blood donors in the study blood center is 2.2%.
Results: The rate of false-positivity of the RT-PCR method was found to be 1.6% for the mini pools and 0.04% for the individual blood donors. HBV DNA was not detected in any of the donor bloods.
Conclusion: The hospital blood centers in Turkey still have a high proportion of first time donors and replacement donors; also seropositivity of HBsAg in Turkish blood donors is high compared to Europe and US. Our data pointed to the high false positivity rate of RT PCR method which needs to be evaluated in creating national donor screening algorithms.

In this paper, we report our experience utilizing general anesthesia for oral surgery in a 9-year-old girl who had undergone living donor liver transplantation. She was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma at 4 months of age and underwent a living donor liver transplant at 7 months of age.

Germline DDX41 mutations (DDX41mut) are identified in approximately 5% of myeloid malignancies with excess of blasts, representing a distinct MDS/AML entity. The disease is associated with better outcomes compared to DDX41 wild-type (DDX41WT), but patients who do not undergo allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) may experience late relapse. Due to the recent identification of DDX41mut, data on post-HSCT outcomes remain limited.

In the event of a large-scale radiological or nuclear emergency, a rapid, high-throughput screening tool will be essential for efficient triage of potentially exposed individuals, optimizing scarce medical resources and ensuring timely care. The objective of this work was to characterize the effects of age and sex on two intracellular lymphocyte protein biomarkers, BAX and p53, for early radiation exposure classification in the human population, using an imaging flow cytometry-based platform for rapid biomarker quantification in whole blood samples. Peripheral blood samples from male and female donors, across three adult age groups (young adult, middle-aged, senior) and a juvenile cohort, were X-irradiated (0-5 Gy), and biomarker expression was quantified at two- and three-days post-exposure.

B cells are critical components of the adaptive immune system that proliferate and differentiate within the secondary lymphoid organs upon recognition of antigens and engagement of T cells. Traditional two-dimensional (2D) cell cultures fall short of replicating the intricate structures and dynamic evolution of three-dimensional (3D) environments found in lymphoid organs, prompting the development of more physiologically pertinent models. Our approach employs -hexanoyl glycol chitosan (HGC) coated ultra-low attachment (ULA) lattice plates to cultivate a 3D co-culture of CD40L-expressing MS5 stromal cells and naïve B cells derived from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of healthy human donors.

Background: Inflammatory injury in organ donors, particularly after brain death and during ischemia-reperfusion, contributes to graft dysfunction, rejection, and reduced survival. Statins, beyond their lipid-lowering role, exert pleiotropic anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, including IL-6 suppression, NF-κB inhibition, immune cell modulation, and potential alteration of exosome secretion.
Methods: Building upon this background, this narrative review synthesises preclinical and clinical evidence on pre-donation statin therapy in solid organ transplantation.
