Nineteen teams presented results for the Gene Mention Task at the BioCreative II Workshop. In this task participants designed systems to identify substrings in sentences corresponding to gene name mentions. A variety of different methods were used and the results varied with a highest achieved F1 score of 0.8721. Here we present brief descriptions of all the methods used and a statistical analysis of the results. We also demonstrate that, by combining the results from all submissions, an F score of 0.9066 is feasible, and furthermore that the best result makes use of the lowest scoring submissions.

The accumulated knowledge on the biology of the HIV-1 virus has led to the emergence of technologies that exploit the architecture of retroviruses and their integration or vectorization properties. This field of study constitutes retroviral vectorology, democratized in laboratories by the use of lentiviral vectors. By hijacking retroviral assembly, other systems are emerging and are increasingly mentioned in recent literature.

T-cell therapies have proven to be a promising treatment option for cancer patients in recent years, especially in the case of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy. However, the therapy is associated with insufficient activation of T cells or poor persistence in the patient's body, which leads to incomplete elimination of cancer cells, recurrence, and genotoxicity. By extracting the splice element of PD-1 pre-mRNA using biology based on CRISPR/dCas13 in this study, our ultimate goal is to overcome the above-mentioned challenges in the future.

Most African research reports on the frequent aflatoxin contamination of various foodstuffs, with few reports giving details of the Aspergillus species present in these commodities. Numerous research works provide evidence of the ability of fungi to grow, thrive, and interact with other crop species and focus on the fact that these processes are largely affected by climatic variables. As opposed to the attention directed to the above-mentioned themes, information on the biodiversity of Aspergillus species in maize in most African countries, including South Africa, is lacking.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is characterized by the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells, resulting in lifelong insulin therapy that falls short of a true cure. Beta cell replacement therapies hold immense potential to restore natural insulin production, but they face significant hurdles such as immune rejection, limited donor availability, and long-term graft survival. In this review, we explore cutting-edge advances in genetic engineering, biomaterials, and machine learning approaches designed to overcome these barriers and enhance the clinical applicability of beta cell therapies.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic carcinogen that severely damages many tissues and organs. Quercetin (Que) is a flavonol known for its excellent antioxidant properties. Forty-eight 1-day-old male Hyland egg-laying chickens were assigned to the following treatments: control group; 150 mg/kg Cd group; 250 mg/kg Que group; and 150 mg/kg Cd + 250 mg/kg Que group.
