Article Synopsis

  • The tidal energy dissipation on Jupiter's moon Io has likely caused a significant portion of its interior to melt.
  • This molten state can lead to geological activity and surface changes on Io.
  • Observations made by Voyager I may show evidence of these processes in Io's surface features.

Article Abstract

The dissipation of tidal energy in Jupiter's satellite Io is likely to have melted a major fraction of the mass. Consequences of a largely molten interior may be evident in pictures of Io's surface returned by Voyager I.

Tidal interactions play a key role in the dynamics and evolution of icy worlds. The intense tectonic activity of Europa and the eruption activity on Enceladus are clear examples of the manifestation of tidal deformation and associated dissipation. While tidal heating has long been recognized as a major driver in the activity of these icy worlds, the mechanism controlling how tidal forces deform the different internal layers and produce heat by tidal friction still remains poorly constrained.

The last giant impact on Earth is thought to have formed the Moon. The timing of this event can be determined by dating the different rocks assumed to have crystallized from the lunar magma ocean (LMO). This has led to a wide range of estimates for the age of the Moon between 4.

Io experiences tidal deformation as a result of its eccentric orbit around Jupiter, which provides a primary energy source for Io's continuing volcanic activity and infrared emission. The amount of tidal energy dissipated within Io is enormous and has been suggested to support the large-scale melting of its interior and the formation of a global subsurface magma ocean. If Io has a shallow global magma ocean, its tidal deformation would be much larger than in the case of a more rigid, mostly solid interior.

Background: Common causes of air leakage around an endotracheal tube include insufficient endotracheal tube cuff inflation and damage to the cuff, while damage to the pilot balloon or pilot balloon tubing is relatively rare.

Case Presentation: A 74-year-old female with vertebral osteomyelitis was scheduled for an extreme lateral interbody fusion followed posterior fixation. A fiber-optic light was utilized as part of the surgical illuminator.
